McCombs picks Central Florida

The website Midstatehoops.com and other recruiting websites, including Peegs, are reporting that Dwight McCombs has committed to Central Florida. McCombs, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward at Moraine Valley Community College at Illinois, had interest from Indiana and was reportedly scheduling a visit to IU, but chose to make his commitment official on Monday.

McCombs was also considering Arizona State, Auburn and Middle Tennessee State.

McCombs is the third Class of 2010 Indiana target in the past week and the fourth in the past six weeks to spurn the Hoosiers, joining forwards Will Yeguete, Cody Larson and Moses Abraham. The reported possibilities for the Class of 2010 are down to three transfers: John Wilkins, a 6-foot-9 forward from Southeastern Community College in Iowa; Walter Offutt, a 6-3 guard who transferred from both Ohio State and Wright State who is considering walking on at IU; and Emmanuel Negedu, a 6-foot-7 Nigerian native who initially chose Tennessee over Indiana but will likely transfer because the Volunteers will not let him play because of a scary incident in September.

The 21-year-old suffered cardiac arrest when his heart stopped after a light workout and a race with a teammate on Tennessee’s football practice field. He was resuscitated and later had an internal cardiac defibrillator implanted in his chest. He has since met with two doctors, one at Tennessee and one in California, and both cleared him to play, but the Tennessee athletic department would not grant him medical clearance. He was told he could stay at Tennessee and the school would honor his scholarship or he could request his release and it would be granted.

According to sources, the 6-foot-7, 225-pounder still wants to play basketball and will therefore likely request his release. Indiana is the one the schools he is apparently considering. He was seen in Bloomington this weekend and reportedly met with IU doctors. It is unknown how those tests went or what other schools he is considering.

  1. Emmanuel if your reading this come to Indiana you will be in good hands with CTC and his staff Gooo Hooosiers!!!

  2. Interesting that he didn’t choose Arizona State…

As has been mentioned, this isn’t surprising, given the rumors that continue to heat up about Negedu. There’d be no point in McCombs transferring so he can play second fiddle to another transfer.

  3. At this point let’s just shelf the scholarship for next year’s class. If Walter Offutt is added as a walk-on, then that’s a bonus.

    PB

  4. jeez. we lose out vs. central florida?!? this guy must have wanted to make sure he wouldn’t have to go to ANY classes.

  5. The Best facilities, The hottest coach and get beat out by central Florida. Hahahaha LOLOLOLOL. Think maybe he remembers how we shafted Mike Davis???? Everyone keeps runnin there mouth and sayin how crazy this is, but cannot come up with an explanation of how Central Florida and all these schools beat us out. Go Bulldogs!!!

  6. Good job Crean and staff. Once again you have out done yourself. Central Florida, come on!! Is is to late to start bringing in some girls and have them try out for the team? If we could get some of the girls from the national championship team, well we would be closer to getting some studs in the doors. There is no other way to put this, we can not get the big time stud that wants to step into a program that is going to get worse.

  7. doug, that theory holds no weight. IU had no trouble recruiting when Sampson was here after Davis left but now after the program was brought down it is tough. You should do your research!

  8. Did you REALLY want these players? IU right now has 1 scholarship for this year, 1 for next year and 3 for the following year. Next year we are hoping for Etherington, Davis and Zeller. The year after that we are hopping for 3-4 out of Smith-Rivera, Kaminski, Jurkin, Perea, Ramey, Patterson, Bell, Hollowell, Marrero, Hammons, Harris, Aget, Yogi Ferrell, etc. I am not worried at all if we do not get anyone for our last scholarship in 2010:”McCombs is the third Class of 2010 Indiana target in the past week and the fourth in the past six weeks to spurn the Hoosiers, joining forwards Will Yeguete, Cody Larson and Moses Abraham. The reported possibilities for the Class of 2010 are down to three transfers: John Wilkins, a 6-foot-9 forward from Southeastern Community College in Iowa; Walter Offutt, a 6-3 guard who transferred from both Ohio State and Wright State who is considering walking on at IU; and Emmanuel Negedu, a 6-foot-7 Nigerian native who initially chose Tennessee over Indiana but will likely transfer because the Volunteers will not let him play because of a scary incident in September.” I hope that Offutt walks-on (and that Negedu also walks on-no scholarship) and that 2011 and 2012 are great years for IU recruiting! I know that IU went all-out to land Abraham, I am not sure we did, or that we should have, on the other 5 that you mention.

  9. Appears his interest in IU was not very high in the first place seeing how he did not take a visit here but does take a visit to UCF without any prior chatter. Maybe he is not the kind of person turned on by a challenge.

  10. In the end, is McCombs better than Capo….if not..why take him

I also agree on banking the scholarship, but I still think someone might leave…..in the end, some will have to go to balance out the scholarships.

  11. BeatPurdue: Out of all the names you listed, how many of those do you think IU will really get? I think all of us on here would like to say two or three, but in the back of our minds, we know it is not going to happen. Lets go back to the basics. Find the two star recruits and lets go with those. Sure, it would be a project, but what are we doing now?

  12. Jubilee, like you I too think that BC may be the only person next year who can be effective in the middle. His motor is high RPM, his tools are fair, he has that hit the floor attitude and an above average BB IQ. He does lack shot blocking hops and a polished offense but he does sacrifice himself at both ends.

  13. Why is everybody so upset that this kid chose Central Florida? It’s not like it was down to IU and UCF, he had other (read: better) schools on his list than UCF (ASU, Auburn, MTSU), so clearly he connected with somebody at UCF. Furthermore, the Midstatehoops article also says that he already rejected offers from the following schools: Arkansas, Minnesota, Missouri, NC State, and Penn State. All of those schools are better than UCF, so I don’t think this decision can be read as “Crean sucks” or “IU is terrible”; this kid clearly *wanted* to go to UCF, no matter who else was in the picture… and it probably didn’t help that the Negedu rumors have been swirling.

  14. Its not always the coaches fault when these young players don’t come to IU. Some of them we don’t need anyway, we’ll be ok. Just let things work out for the best/time will tell i guess. Kids are different now than they were years ago, no commitment anymore. And they listen to allot of people, some of which don’t give them good advice. We could always hire a guy like Calipari, he’s allot like Sampson i think.
