Doss out for opener

Tandon Doss’s groin injury kept him off of the depth chart released Monday morning and will now apparently keep him out of Thursday’s game.

Indiana coach Bill Lynch confirmed after practice Monday that Doss will not play in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. season opener against Towson.

“Tandon is not going to play,” Lynch said. “He’s been day-to-day, but I thought in fairness to him and probably the other guys, he’s just not making the progress that he needs to to play Thursday night at full speed. It’s a long year, and it’s the type of injury that we don’t want it to be a lingering injury throughout the year, so we kind of made the decision today after the injury report that he won’t play on Thursday.”

The Hoosiers will instead start redshirt freshman wide receiver Duwyce Wilson in his place. Junior Dre Muhammad was still out of Monday’s practice with an ankle injury, so he would appear unlikely to return. That would likely mean that redshirt freshman Jamonne Chester would step in in four-wide receiver sets. Doss’s injury makes it appear more likely that true freshman Kofi Hughes could see time. He’s listed as one of the three backups on Monday’s depth chart.

In other injury news, running back Zach Davis-Walker (groin) was back in practice on Monday, as was defensive end Fred Jones. True freshmen Logan Young, Tim O’Connor and Leneil Himes were all still out.

Now that classes have begun, the roster can expand beyond the 105 that were allowed in preseason practice. Freshman safety Shaquille Jefferson and linebacker Ryan Phillis, who were both recovering from injuries, have now joined the squad. However, cornerback Cameron Cole did not qualify academically and linebacker Jack Denton, who graduated high school early to come to spring practice, has withdrawn from school. At the beginning of preseason practice, Lynch said there were some expectations that Denton didn’t meet and that he would have to meet them before he rejoined the team.

  1. Doss should be fine. We should be able to pound it on the ground with our line against their D line. I expect to see us really strong there.

We wont need him and I am excited to see what Duwyce can do. Interesting on Denton. One of those stories you’ll likely never hear much detail about. Something happened there.

  2. Hate to see this for Tandon. But it’s better to sit out this game and recover, especially with Game 2 not until 9/18. The long break should easily allow him to recover.

I also think Duwyce will be great. I completely expect him to break on the field the same as Doss did. By that, I mean Doss immediately showed signs of greatness and I believe we’ll see the same thing from Duwyce on Thursday night.

Having said that, GO HOOSIERS!!!! I can’t wait to get my 1/2 day of work over with on Thursday morning. So, I can hit B-Town in the afternoon to tailgate and then cheer on the Hoosiers! Can’t wait to see the new big screen! Let’s get it!

  3. Mike W, I am with you all the way, 1/2 day here too. Any info on Denton? It is strange, especially after he came to IU early and all.

  4. Well i can’t wait to get my 1/2 day of work over with on Thursday morning. So, I can hit B-Town in the afternoon to tailgate and then cheer on the Hoosiers! Can’t wait to see the new big screen
