Hoosier Morning

Indiana guard Jeremiah Rivers is fouled by SIU Edwardsville guard Kevin Stineman during the team’s game on Dec. 17. The Hoosiers play host to Penn State in today’s Big Ten opener.

STARTING FIVE

1. INDIANA BASKETBALL

Tom Crean said his team learned from Las Vegas that it is far better playing as one and must carry that knowledge into today’s game against Penn State, I wrote.

While IU is coming off two games on Dec. 22 and 23, Penn State has played just twice in the last 15 days, the Star’s Terry Hutchens wrote. There was little in Las Vegas to offer hope of something other than a bottom-third finish in the Big Ten, the Evansville Courier & Press’ Tim Ethridge wrote.

Here is a video from ESPN.com’s Andy Katz of his interview with Crean. He talks about a lot — mentioning the idea of playing small more — and keep in mind this was taken right after he met with us, so his frame of mind was in that moment.

2. SMITH-RIVERA AVAILABLE AGAIN

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera decommitted from Xavier late Sunday night. The 2012 guard committed to the Musketeers in October and told the IDS’ Greg Rosenstein a new list of schools that did not include Indiana. But he did say he was still interested in Indiana, and told the Star’s Kyle Neddenriep he was “wide open.”

Here’s a quick video of Smith-Rivera.

3. INDIANA SOCCER

Will Bruin, an All-American and one of three finalists for the Hermann Trophy, has decided to leave Indiana a year early and join MLS, Jeremy Price wrote.

It’s a Generation Adidas contract, which the Kansas City Star explains here. Essentially, the idea is to get young American players to stay and play for the MLS instead of bolting to Europe.

4. BIG TEN BASKETBALL

In Ohio State’s final nonconference game, against UT-Martin, William Buford is looking to rediscover his jump shot, the Columbus Dispatch’s Bob Baptist wrote.

A handful of Big Ten previews in the last couple of days. Madison.com’s Rob Schultz has Indiana No. 8, while the Dispatch’s Bob Baptist and AnnArbor.com’s Mike Rothstein have the Hoosiers ninth.

5. ONE FOR THE ROAD

A Hoosier Morning favorite, dedicated to Penn State’s Talor Battle: Mumford & Son’s “Little Lion Man.”

  1. what a great song. I heard it on 92.3 a month ago and downloaded it that same day. Think the dedication should have been to Jordy Hulls though! Here is to Hulls figuring out he must be more aggressive shooting the ball for IU to do well!!!

  2. NEW POLL QUESTION: Does Eric Gordon deserve a spot on the NBA All-Star team? EJ is currently the 9th leading scorer(23.7 ppg) in the NBA.

    (If DJ White was a top-10 scorer would you feel any differently?}

  3. Any idea why Smith-Rivera decommitted from X? Any idea whether IU will recruit him? That’s our Perea-Jurkin-Patterson-Ferrell class so we’ve already got a couple guards, but he’s highly-rated.

  4. We jumped too quickly to get that pipsqueak from Park Tudor. Some of the talented players in the state were getting enough interest from other programs making it unnecessary their holding out to be a Cody Zeller domino. How many of Crean’s later commitments would have signed with the Hoosiers if Zeller went elsewhere?

    Wasn’t Peggy Lipton hot?
