IU volleyball at Dayton Regional

Indiana (0) 18 21 20
So California (3) 25 25 25

3RD SET: USC showing killer instinct, IU looking lost forcing Dunbar to call TO. Scary thought, Stanford wiped this team out twice in Pac-10 play. IU coming back. At 15-15, USC now showing why its ranked in top 10, pounding two kills to jump-start a 5-0 run and USC rolls on into final eight. it’s the fifth time this season Hoosiers were swept, all by ranked teams outside of Purdue. IU ends 23-12.
2ND SET: Quick fact: IU 0-7 in regular season after losing first set, 2-0 in postseason. This looks more like it. IU gaining confidence, but seemingly paying for every miscue. Hoosiers had parried everything thrown at them so far, but lost it late after being tied at 17. IU is scrapping as hard as it can, but a kill off the block and an attack error ends it. Season on the line now. Back in 10 minutes.
Stats: Benson 9 kills (.353), Haverly 8 kills, Obeime 4, Marschall 3. IU hitting .110. Cox 12 digs. USC: Fonoimoana and Lauren Williams 7 kills, Jupter 6, setter Bateman 4 (with 8 digs and 2 aces). Easy to see how Trojan middles 6-4 Williams and 6-5 Alexis Olgard are hitting well over .350 for season. They just hit it straight down. USC hitting .224, 75 percent on sideouts to IU’s 59.
1ST SET: So what’s new, IU’s starting slow. At least half of USC points so far by Hoosier mistakes early. But IU looks no means overmatched so far and it tipping quite few shots at the net and libero Caitlin Cox (6 digs) is having a terrific game on the backrow. It’s just that USC is so tall with five in the regular rotation 6-2 or taller. Trojans putting up a great block, especially in the middle. But Ashley Benson is 3-for-3 so far in hitting, Jordan haverly has 4 kills, Ivie Obieime 2. In the end, USC too powerful so far and sneaky, too, with three dink kills. All-America Alex Jupiter and freshman Falyn Fonoimoana have to be as hard as anythign IU’s seen this year and with as much dipping movement as a major league slider.

Hi Jim Gordillo on line from Ohio.
What a great day in Dayton (has that ever been written before) as IU preps to take on USC in the first game of the Dayton volleyball regional.
Tip is at 4 and quite a few Hoosier fans were waiting when the doors to the UD Arena opened at 3.
The seating situation here is better than at U Gym where I sat at the end of the court and got balls hammered at us (and out computers and drinks) during warm ups. I’m just inside the baseline right across from the IU bench and we’ve had a few cross court shots bounce our way.
USC in home white, IU in crimson and cream.
IU fans out numbering USC’s group of 30 by wide margin. See if it helps.
Updates after we get going.
