IU volleyball vs. Tennessee

Indiana 18 25 20 27 15– 3
Tennessee 25 21 25 25 13– 2

5TH SET: UT off quick, Fowler putting three away already, forcing IU timeout at 6-3. Switch sides at 8-6. Two terrific digs by libero Caitlin Cox saves critical point for IU to tie it at 8. Block by Benson on Cikra ties it at 10. Kill by Haverly off Cikra block has IU up. TO UT. Cox serving. AE by Vols. Another TO.
Kill by Fowler makes it 14-13, but Kylann Scheidt’s serve for UT is long. IU wins and heads to Dayton. A first-time Sweet 16 appearance.

4TH SET: This is it for IU. 10 ties last set, more of the same here. Just like before, score knotted at 8, only this time, its IU which broke out to a two-point lead and hung on to it. But just barely. A kill by Fowler made it 23-22, two attack errors knotted it at 24. A kill by Haverly deflected to the floor and a bad serve by IU tied it again at 25. Then the lefty Marschall came through with a kill and a block ended it in IU’s favor. On to set 5 for the second night in a row. Haverly 25 kills, Benson 13, Marschall 8. Cikra 18 for UT.
3RD SET: Back and forth so far. Looks like Ivie Obeime has her swing going. But when UT took a 15-13 lead, that was it for IU as the Vols never let go of it despite the Hoosiers getting within one six times. It was IU’s best hitting set yet at .333, but UT was a blistering .640. Leslie Cikra stepping up for UT with 11 kills. Haverly has 16 for IU, Benson 8, Wittmer 6 and Kelci Marschall 5. 10 digs for Haverly as well.
2ND SET: After falling behind 4-0, IU finally starting to get going and when it tied the set at 4, the crowd got loud for the first time. But after timeout at 20-14, UT rebounded. A back row kill by All-American Nikki Fowler has IU calling for a break. At 21-19, IU made some big plays. Taylor Whitmer had a kill and after giving up a point with some miscommunication, a big block led to a lift call on UT and a 23-20 lead. A huge dig off a spike by Fowler led to a dink kill by Jordan Haverly. She finished it off with a kill off the block to even the match at 1-1. Haverly leading the way again with 8 kills and 8 digs and 3 block assists. Benson has 6 kills (.286) and 3 BAs. IU still hitting only .108 but UT’s fallen to .188. 29 digs for UT, 26 for IU. Back in 10 min.

1ST SET: IU struggling early again like yesterday and UT isn’t letting Hoosier get back in it. DeeDee Harrison having another big day for the Vols. Ashley Benson’s timing is off as IU looks for something to start clicking. IU hitting .000 (9 kills to 9 errors) to UT’s .233. True to form, three Vols with three kills each.
Once again, Jim Gordillo back at University Gym for Saturday’s second-round NCAA volleyball matchup between No. 21 and 11th-seeded Tennessee and IU. Hoosiers are 4-4 this season vs. ranked competition, but have never won a second-round tournament match.
Tips at 3. Stay tuned as a near packed house (not as many fans here today, nor any cheerleaders) sits cozy on a snowy day.

  1. Just like the Miami match! The Hoosiers take a little time to warm up, then WATCH OUT! Dial it down, Ivy, and stop trying to hit the ball to Linton every time you swing!

  2. This is great for the athletic department, which was in need of a lift. I’m not talking recruiting, I’m talking performance.

    Go IU!!!
