Ohio State 82, Indiana 61

COLUMBUS, Ohio — At one point during the first half Sunday, Deshaun Thomas had 14 points. Indiana had 13.

The freshman forward from Fort Wayne scored 22 points for the game, leading the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes to an 82-61 win against Indiana.

The Hoosiers briefly held the lead and the game was tied 8-8 for some time, but Ohio State went on a 16-2 run, fueled by the streaky Thomas, and cruised the rest of the way.

Indiana turned the ball over 14 times — five alone from Christian Watford.

Indiana was 0-of-8 from 3-point range in the first half.

Indiana shot 38.5 percent for the game.

Indiana did not have nearly enough energy, did not execute at a high-enough level and had trouble matching up with Ohio State’s players.

The offense was not sharp, with not enough movement early on. Jordan Hulls struggled, finishing 1-of-9. Ohio State’s David Lighty said the focus was on disrupting Hulls, which is something many a team has tried but have not always been successful at.

Indiana has now lost six games in a row and remains the No. 11 seed in the Big Ten Tournament if the regular season ended today, instead of a week from now.

  1. Not surprised at this outcome. Hell I don’t think nobody is gonna go into OSU house and beat them with this squad they got playing for them.
But like I been saying before this Hoosier program will get turned around and the sleeping giant in the Big Ten will be awaken once again and that is the INDIANA HOOSIERS!!!!
go I.U. and the future it will bring.

  2. Up 21 with 1:16 and OSU decides to keep shooting the threes. Really? They should tear down all of Columbus, pave it over, and make one big parking lot.

  3. What’s it gonna take for Crean to knock down those open shots? When he gets an open look he’s gotta connect.

  4. Yeah we’re on the same level as Purdue except for our record 12-17 or whatever it is now.RATIONALIZE AWAY PAL.

  5. Yeah I agree, I cant believe Crean cant hit all of those shots!!! You know hes the one shooting all of them and not gettng back on defense. Crean cant do it all himself!

  6. I don’t know how things are going to turn out. I’m one of those who thinks that Crean is the “right” guy and we’re going to be back where we want to be. That being said, if we get the same result in Columbus 2 years from now, he better be gone. If he wins there, he’ll be everybody’s guy.

  7. and IU falls to 3-17 on the year, wow that is awful even by IU standards.

I fully understand that Crean won’t be fired(next year), nor should he be I suppose. However, next year is completely on him, no excuses can possibly be used for next season. Next year if everyone stays: Pritchard and Verdell are 4 year B1G senior starters, Hulls, Watford, Creek, Elston will be 3rd year players with plenty of experience, Sheehey and Oladipo will be experienced sophs and Zeller is a top 15 freshman center. If they cannot(in what will be a much more wide open B1G) win games and be respectable, and have a chance at the tourney… its all on Crean and his coaching abilities(or lack there of). The disappointing part is that nothing has been done this season on the court to show improvement or to give any hint that we can expect good things next season. Sure Crean won’t get fired (because of the 2012 class he’s bringing) but it will be the season where IU fans finally wake up and start holding him responsible for getting wins. No more excuses for Tommy Crean, it will be fun to see if he can coach in an excuse free environment because for the past 3 years he’s used every excuse known to man. 3-17 in his third season? Wow. Awful. The one thing I’ve learned from Crean is that college coaches cannot coach the game of basketball, maybe they can recruit and let players play, and thats great, but you can tell by watching him attempt to coach that he has no more knowledge of the game than any of the thousands of JV bball coaches or Middle school bball coaches all over the globe…sad to see it, but its true.

  8. Good point Chet: Larry and his stupid facts. Emphasis on stupid. Penn State lost by 3 in Colunbus. IUPUI by 11. Northwestern by 1 in Evanston. We lost badly today and we lost badly on Dec. 31 last year. One Indiana Mr Basketball playing for Matta and one forTom Crean. That’s all that matters. One is a coach the other one is a fraud. Good night.

  9. reality: when you combine the 11th best team in the Big10 with the worst coach in the Big 10 with the officials calling phantom fouls besides the legitimate ones IU makes by playing lousy defense– you get the performance like today and past games. Cody Zeller will not change the putrid performances of existing coaches and players– unfortunately he may be tainted by it. The only reason everyone is so high on Hulls is because everyone else is sobad. Even provided all 2012 players stay committed– only Patterson and maybe Yogi will have immediate impact. Ohio State has some really good players on the bench and coming in 2011. The truth is that if every team in the Big 10 had equal talent next year– a Crean coached team would be in the bottom half of the league because so many coaches are that much better.

  10. Crean needs to be more diplomatic in losing. He should be much better by now as much practice that he has.

Why does he not look the opposing coach in the eye and rush by them when he shakes their hand? He does this to almost everyone except for his buddy Izzo. He needs to take a lesson or two from Izzo about being respectful.

  11. Crean needs to be more polite? You do realize that he stayed and talked to Matta while shaking hands for almost a minute today right?

Anyway, I am as frustrated as anyone with losing. I think that there are probably a hundred reasons for it, not all of which fall on Crean. The main thing I put on Crean is that he has been too stubborn about his style of basketball. I imagine that he thought he was preparing for when they started to win and didn’t expect it would be this bad in the meantime.

I think that Crean is the right coach in almost every facet of rebuilding this program, but there are a couple of ways that he has shown he is not the right guy. I believe that the good out weighs the bad, but he gets next year to have them in at least the NIT and a run in the NCAA’s the year after or he needs to move on.

  12. with the schedule they gift wrapped this year with 9 cheap wins this was supposed to be the ‘nit year’, instead it was the ‘wow we aren’t any better at all’ year

  13. When Indiana hired Crean, I told you all how you would be regretting it. Your hi lite of the year is beating Illinois at home? I saw a video on youtube with Crean in the hall cheering with the students. This tells you how far IU bb has fallen. What an embarrasment. As a Marquette fan, Crean gets your hopes up then the Real Crean comes out, a lot of pep and energy, but really no clue. You like him, keep him. I warned you 3 years ago. How many more years are you giving this guy.

  14. did you see Matta’s reaction after Crean spoke to him? he wasn’t impressed. shook his head. Just like Hoosier nation is….

  15. Hoss- you guys are 1-2 in the ncaa’s without crean and you aren’t going this year, thanks for warning us that your MU team isn’t good

    RAM
Rationalize what? I never said we are the same team as Purdue, I simply stated the outcomes at Ohio St. were similar.

Don’t ya just love people that with telepathic powers know what someone is thinking from behind a TV screen. So you can look at physical behavior & know what a person is thinking from a tv screen?

  19. Embarassing display! Knight helping Matta makes it worse. Guess Bobby’s true colors are showing through!

  20. Some of you people are so delusional. Did you REALLY expect IU to go into Columbus and steal a victory? Maybe a few years from now, yes, we should expect that. But this year? With THIS team? I mean, face it folks….coming into the season, virtually every team in the Big Ten had better talent, and WAY more experience under their belts. It was ALWAYS going to be a rough conference season, regardless of you Pollyanna’s out there who thought we might be an NCAA bubble team.

Take a deep breath folks…it’s only Year 2 of a hard rebuilding effort (I don’t count the first year, when Kyle Taber was the only returning player). With a couple of exceptions, IU has been WAY more competitive this year than they were last year. And THAT is where the improvement is, at least for this year. Now, eventually, yes, we need to see improvement in the win/loss column as well….but this wasn’t the year for that. It’s great to have high expectations…but they also have to be reasonable expectations.

  21. Disheartening. Pitiful. Even the announcers on the previous game questioned why Crean doesn’t coach to set screens for Hulls. Frustrating. No obvious rhyme or reason to the way we play. One for one and none for all.

  22. You guys do realize that if Deshaun Thomas played for IU, he’d be the best player on the team, right? He doesn’t even start for OSU, so have some perspective about the loss. Yeah, I’m as sick and tired of watching this crap as anyone else, but I’ll at least reserve judgment on Crean until he gets a team of decent players for his starting 5. And where did the Marquette troll come from? You that bored dude?

  23. Coach Crean is a fine family man and a great leader of young men.He is also a very good recruiter and a adequate basketball coach. The fact that he took the Indiana job shows he has a tremendous amount of courage.Who among us could have the patience he has shown with some of these players who appear to be basketball challenged? I think that in due time he will get the job done.Until then I will try to keep my frustrations from boiling over and not post anything for at least 48 hours after a loss.

  24. All this does is continue to show the lack of talent that IU has. What other team in the Big 10 is playing kids like Daniel Moore and Matt Roth and Rivers. These kids have no business being on the floor in a Big 10 game. I’m sure they are great kids, but no business being out there. You can’t even judge Crean as a coach until he has talent to deal with. No inside game whatsoever. None. This team relies on dribble drive and shooting jumpers. You will not beat anyone like that.

  25. Ferg, Travis- no one is complaining about IU losing to OSU, PU, Wisc; but if you can beat minny, illini and play with MSU, you should be able to beat NW, Iowa and not go 0-4 against them on the season. IU has won 3 games this year total, that is what people are upset about, not the loss to OSU.

RAM- wake up, he took the job because it gave him a gigantic pay raise, not because ‘its indiana’ he took this IU job because he is making millions and he has a long contract, 2 things that MU did not offer him, stop making it sound like he is living in trailer with a ‘will coach for food’ sign.

if IU fans are still making excuses for Crean next year, if IU continues to lose and fans still think it has absolutely nothing to do with Crean….the decimation of Indiana basketball knowledge will be in full effect.

  26. 3-17 as you do through life you will find that money is nothing more than a bunch of numbers on your bank statement. People with integrity do not do things just for money. If Coach Crean has anything he has integrity.Besides he is not a business major so there is little chance he checked his morals and ethics at the door.

  27. Now thats a good fact Travis. I mentioned that a couple of times. They played more like a team. Did’nt stand around waiting for Jones or Watford to shoot.

  28. RAM- hahahahaha, if you want to overlook the facts that is up to you

Travis/Mass- yeah I agree; and when Crean talks accountability and doesn’t hold Watford or Jones accountable for their continual mistakes(sure both bring good things but they also play losing basketball the last 4-5mins of each game). Until Crean has the guts to bench those guys and go with guys who don’t continually make the same mistakes repeatedly…he’ll just continue to have good kids like Hulls and probably Zeller soon, tuning him out.

  29. First off, MU is going to the dance, Where will Crean and IU be? Not even the NIT? That is said. If I could find the April 2008 online comments, you will see what i posted. But you hoosiers wouldnt believe it. Can you answer me this, was the Illinois win at home that significant? Illinois might not even go to the dance, and Crean and the fans celebrated as if it were a final 4. But, this is the current state of IU bb, a win for the hoosiers and maybe you all can get a free haircut. Our hickorys wont crack! Listen, please keep Crean as long as you want! Save this, we will talk in 2 years. then maybe a win over Indiana college of minds and technology will be a win worth celebrating.

  30. Marquette is heading to the NCAA baby! Good luck to Hooosierss. Hoo !Hoo ! Via Tom Crean and the student body after a big win vs Illini. Way to go UI you have 3 conference wins, Wow that is great. you lose to Iowa??
