Webb commits to IU women for 2012

The IU women’s basketball team got its first commitment of 2012 Tuesday night when Heritage Christian’s Brittany Webb verbally committed to the Hoosiers.

Webb is a 5-foot-4 point guard with a very consistent 3-point shot, strong ballhandling skills and an overall outstanding floor game. Her AAU coach, Danny Riego, says her height is not an issue.

“Her height, the times that it’s hurt us in a game has been very limited,” he said. “If you’re not tallest, you have to understand how to play angles to minimize that stuff. Sometimes basketball IQ can outweigh height issues or mismatches.
“From the point guard position, she’s so good with basketball. It’s hard to stay in front of her. if you can’t stay in front of somebody, they’re going to hurt you.”

Webb says she had other offers from South Alabama and St. Joseph’s, but after a strong performance at the Deep South Classic two weekends ago and the chance to further showcase her skills this coming weekend at a tournament in Chicago, others might have joined the fray. But Webb is happy to be a Hoosier.

“Whenever I watch them play, they’re mostly up and down, so I feel my speed is going to be an advantage,” she said. “I feel like speed and then my court vision can help to get the ball into the post. I feel like I’m a complete point guard because of my ballhandling and court vision, then my shooting.”

  1. Great, a good player from Indiana. This goes well with the 2011 class. Keep it going upward Coach Legette-Jack! Could you writers at the HT do an in depth piece about our Coach as a person? The few things that I have picked up sound like she is a very impressive, caring, self-less person off of the court.

  2. Nice to finally see Coach Jack keep talent in state. Not only a necessity in men’s basketball but also women’s. Keep it going coach.
