Northwestern at Indiana baseball, Game 3

UPDATE, End of Game: Indiana right-hander Chad Martin gave up a hit and a walk but sustained a scoreless relief performance and the Hoosiers win 8-2 to take two of three in the series.

UPDATE, End of the Eighth Inning: Indiana went down 1-2-3 in the eighth, but still heads into the ninth with an 8-2 lead.

UPDATE, Middle of the Eighth Inning: Chad Martin got three straight flyouts from Northwestern to escape the eighth. He hasn’t allowed a hit yet in relief. The Hoosiers lead 8-2.

UPDATE, End of the Seventh Inning: Alex Dickerson has been intentionally walked a bunch of times, but he’s rarely had someone intentionally walked in front of him. Northwestern tried it, and he made them pay.

After  an RBI double by third baseman Dustin DeMuth made it 4-2, Northwestern took starter Michael Jahns out for Paul Snieder. Snider intentionally walked Johnson to load the bases for Dickerson. Dickerson answered with a hard grounder up the middle threw a drawn-in infield to score DeMuth and right fielder Justin Cureton. A throwing error by Northwestern allowed Johnson to score another run and sent Dickerson to third. Dickerson took third on a wild pitch and later scored on a cheap flare double by right fielder Wes Wilson. The Hoosiers now lead 8-2.

UPDATE, Middle of the Seventh Inning: Shortstop Thomas Stevens drew a two-out walk, but Chris Lashmet popped up to end the inning and Chad Martin posted a shutout inning of relief. The Hoosiers still lead 3-2.

UPDATE, End of the Sixth Inning: IU right fielder Wes Wilson battled back from a 1-2 count and hit a double on a nine-pitch at bat, but he was the only batter to reach in the sixth. Michael Johns retired the other three, but the Hoosiers still lead 3-2.

UPDATE, Middle of the Sixth Inning: Indiana catcher Ty Downing threw out Northwestern’s Jack Livingston stealing, then Chad Martin got left fielder Nick Linne to fly out to center field to end the inning. The Hoosiers lead 3-2.

UPDATE, Top of the Sixth Inning: Blake Monar was cruising through 5 1/3, but it got rough quick. Northwestern’s Jack Havey hit a high fastball out of the park to make it 3-1. Center fielder Kyle Ruchim then doubled to the left-center field gap and right fielder Jack Livingston followed with an RBI single. Tracy Smith elected to take Monar out for reliever Chad Martin. Hoosiers still lead 3-2.

UPDATE, End of the Fifth Inning: The Hoosiers scored  a run without a hit in the fifth. Michael Basil reached on an error at third base. Right fielder Justin Cureton was hit by a pitch. Basil moved to third base on a force at second. Second baseman Micah Johnson hit a hard one-hopper to second that Northwestern’s Patrick Miller misplayed to allow Basil to score and make it 3-0 Hoosiers.

UPDATE, Middle of the Fifth Inning: Northwestern catcher Geoff Rowan had a one out single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on an Error, but Blake Monar got Chris Lashmet to ground to second to end the inning. The Hoosiers lead 2-0.

UPDATE, End of the Fourth Inning: After giving up two runs in the third, Michael Jahns retired Indiana 1-2-3 in the fourth. Hoosers still lead 2-0.

UPDATE, Middle of the Fourth Inning: Blake Monar issued a leadoff walk to start the inning, but retired the next three batters. IU leads 2-0.

UPDATE, End of the Third Inning: Right fielder Justin Cureton and Micah Johnson each came through with an RBI single in the third to put the Hoosiers ahead 2-0.

UPDATE, Middle of the Third Inning: Blake Monar gave up two hits, one being a bunt, in the third, but still kept Northwestern off the board, striking out two batters. Game is still scoreless.

UPDATE, End of the First Inning: Northwestern’s Michael Jahns got through the first nearly as fast as Monar did, His 1-2-3 inning took 13 pitches. It’s 0-0 after 1.
