Illinois LB Mike Cotton commits to IU

Mike Cotton, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound outside linebacker from O’Fallon High School in Illinois has committed to Indiana, according to his coach’s Twitter account.

According to the O’Fallon website, Cotton had nine sacks and 81 tackles last season.

More on this hopefully soon.

UPDATE: 5:03 p.m.

Cotton picked Indiana over scholarship offers from Kansas State, Northern Illinois and Bowling Green, but he was also receiving interest from Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri.

The Hoosiers offered Cotton back in December, shortly after Wilson was hired, and Cotton was sold enough on the Hoosiers not to wait out the state school or the other historical powers that appeared close to offering.

“We sat down a few days ago and did some pluses and minuses of each school,” O’Fallon coach Brandon Joggerst said. “And we were considering offers. You know, ‘What if Missouri offers? What if this school offers?’ And whoever it was, he still said Indiana. I said, ‘I think you’ve made up your mind.'”

Said Cotton: “I really liked the environment down there. I really liked the coaches. I like the type of defense they run. I think it’s a really good choice for me.”

Cotton had nine sacks and 81 tackles as an outside linebacker last season. He and Joggerst said their version of the 4-3 runs very similar to Indiana’s and should fit Cotton well.

“He’s very physically gifted,” Joggerst said. “He’s got long arms, and he’s really well put together but he’s not filled out yet. … He’s very imposing when he gets through. He’s very good at filling in the run.”

  1. Another interesting early get for Coach W. Was being pursued by Kansas State, and had Nebraska and Ohio State popping in for visits.

  2. I like his speed at LB. Also, IU needs to pull some good recruits out of Illinois. Lets keep it moving forward, and “Welcome to the Hoosier Nation” Mike!

  3. He should be about 225 when he arrives in Bloomington as a freshman. Will probably “fill out” at about 240 before he is done playing college ball. Looks like another solid recruit.
