Belcher recognized as player to watch

The Big Ten asked the media to nominate five players to watch in each Big Ten division. Indiana wide receiver Damarlo Belcher was recognized Thursday morning as one of them. From Indiana sports information.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana senior wide receiver Damarlo Belcher is one of 12 players on the Big Ten’s inaugural football Players to Watch List, the league announced Thursday morning. Big Ten coaches voted to institute a preseason Players to Watch list beginning this season, honoring five student-athletes each from the Legends Division and Leaders Division. The 2011 list was selected by a media panel and features additional honorees due to a tie.

Belcher led the Hoosiers with 78 receptions and 832 yards in 2010. His 78 catches rank second on IU’s single-season list, one behind James Hardy’s top mark of 79 set back in 2007, and his 832 yards put him ninth on the single-season chart. Belcher led the Big Ten in receptions and topped the league in catches per game (6.50). He also ranked fourth in the conference with 69.3 receiving yards per game and added four touchdowns.

The senior out of Fort Wayne, Ind., became the 15th Hoosier to ever reach 100 career receptions and 1,000 career yards last season. He currently sits third on Indiana’s career list with 164 catches and sixth with 1,939 yards. Hardy is IU’s all-time leader in both categories with 191 receptions and 2,740 yards.

Joining Belcher as Leaders Division honorees are Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase, Ohio State center Mike Brewster and defensive tackle John Simon, Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti and Wisconsin running backs Montee Ball and James White.

Representing the Legends Division are Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins, Nebraska defensive tackle Jared Crick and linebacker Lavonte David and Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa.

  1. Wow didnt know Belcher’s numbers were that high up the IU season list. Especially the receptions. He’s got a chance to put up James Hardy numbers if someone can get him the ball….and we have another receiver or two to take the pressure off.

  2. As Red-Shirt Sophomores both Dusty Kiel and Edward W-Baker are talented and ready for great seasons. Each is far advanced over Ben Chappell at the same stage of his career! IU is blessed with a whole stable full of talented receivers: wides, slots, and tight ends. If we can field a strong offensive line and keep our top runners healthy, the offense should be very good this season.
