Luke Fischer serious about IU interest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It’s not often that a big man with strong fundamentals gets past Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, who has built one of the most consistent programs in the Big Ten on such players.

It’s even more rare that such a player gets past Ryan if that player lives within a two-hour radius of Madison.

Still, that’s what Indiana coach Tom Crean is trying to pull off with Luke Fischer, a 6-foot-9, 210-pound rising junior power forward from Germantown, Wisc. The Hoosiers have already offered him a scholarship. The Badgers have not, but Ryan was present for each of Fischer’s games at the Kentucky Hoopfest, so it’s obvious he’s strongly considering it.

Still, Fischer gave every indication that the Hoosiers will still have a chance at him regardless of what Wisconsin does. He’s already been on a trip to Bloomington and said he liked what he saw.

“When I took my visit in the spring, I loved it a lot,” Fischer said Monday. “The campus is great. The coaching is great. The facilities, the way they play, I just love it. And they have the best recruiting class coming in (for 2012), so they’re gonna be winning a lot. I’m really excited about them recruiting me.”

The Hoosiers have a lot of reason to be excited about him as well. He has great footwork and is extremely skilled in the post.

“Every time he touches the floor, I think he gets better,” said Justin Litscher, Fischer’s coach on the Wisconsin Swing. “He wants to get better. He’s like a sponge. He takes everything in. I think the sky’s the limit for him. … He has a good right hook, good left hook. great footwork. He knows how to seal. He knows when to step out and face up. He’s a really good passer. He’s got a lot of tools.”

The most important improvement he needs to make is in his physical development. Fischer has wiry upper body strength, Litscher said, and he has a strong lower body, but his upper frame could still use some muscle. Both Fischer and his coach said he could use at least 10-15 pounds.

“It’s kind of hard to get in the weight room in July,” Fischer said. “In the fall, in August and stuff, I’ll be in there all the time trying to add on 15 more pounds or something. That would be nice by the start of the season.”

Other than Indiana, Fischer said he also has scholarship offers from Marquette, Creighton and Drake. Wake Forest is also interested, but Fischer said he doesn’t plan on making a decision until next year.

“I’ll probably make it next year, around the fall,” Fischer said. “See how many schools I can get.”
