Carmel DE Shawn Heffern picks IU

Carmel defensive end Shawn Heffern has committed to Indiana, according to this report by 24/7 Sports’ Steve Wiltfong.

Heffern picked the Hoosiers over Purdue, Central Michigan, Toledo and Western Michigan. He is the 16th commitment for the Class of 2012.

More on this story later.

UPDATE, 3:43 p.m.: Spoke to Shawn Heffern earlier. The 6-foot-6 240-pounder said the number of in-state players Indiana had already convinced to commit played a big part in his decision. Some of the players were texting him and suggesting that he should join them.

“Most of the players, Jacob Bailey, Kevin Davis, Jordan Wallace, Wes Rogers, all of them were pushing me,” Heffern said. “They were saying, ‘You gotta be a Hoosier, man.’ That just helps because I have a lot of respect for Indiana football players, especially from the Indianapolis area.”

Heffern said he was impressed by the coaching staff and already had a long relationship with Mark Hagen, himself a Carmel native.

Hagen said he also had interest from Notre Dame and Michigan State, but Notre Dame wanted him to be an outisde linebacker and Michigan State wanted him to wait for an offer. Heffern made the decision because he felt comfortable with Indiana.

  1. Well, he had an offer from another Big Ten team, even if it was only Purdue.

Am I missing something or does it seem Wilson’s staff is doing extremely well, relative to past first-year- coaching staffs, getting Indiana HS players to commit?

    Go Hoosiers.

  2. Rivals Radio or College Sports Radio or whatever they call it on Sirius had a very complimentary piece on the coaching staff the Coach Wilson had assembled. They expressed a bit of surprise over some of the coaches he was able to bring in as lateral movements from their previous employers. A very encouraging piece.

  3. Have you guys ever been on the Scout football recruiting page? It is very confusing. Looks like we have some really good players coming in. Especially this Gunner guy.(JK) Basketball recruiting is easier to differentiate.

  4. Docdave- Not sure if you heard, but according to Scout, we also might have landed Cody Zeller. Can we trust this site? This must be breaking news.

  5. Shawn Heffern is another 6’6″ HS Junior. I think Wilson has more recruits over 6″5″ in this recruiting class than IU has had on its roster in the last four years!

The article I read said that in addition to his other offers, Heffern received “heavy interest” from Mich State, Notre Dame, and Northwestern.

Right now it’s open as to if he’ll play DE or O-linemen. Heffern’s Dad played as a 315 pound O-linemen.

This 2012 recruiting class just keeps getting better and better.
