Roberts named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

For his 102 rushing yards in Saturday’s win over South Carolina State, Indiana tailback D’Angelo Roberts was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. The release from IU follows.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana running back D’Angelo Roberts earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday morning. Roberts joins kicker Mitch Ewald (Nov. 29, 2010) as the only Hoosiers to ever earn the award.

Roberts became the eighth IU true freshman and the first since BenJarvus Green-Ellis (vs. Purdue on Nov. 22, 2003) to post over 100 rushing yards with 102 in the team’s win over South Carolina State. He received 19 carries (5.4 average) and added a 7-yard touchdown with a long rush of 33 yards. Roberts also made two catches for 12 yards.

The Bloomington North High School graduate has played in all three of the team’s games this season. Roberts paces the Hoosiers with 150 rushing yards and a 5.0 average.

Indiana heads to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas (0-3, 0-1 Sun Belt) on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CDT/7 p.m. EDT and ESPN3 will broadcast the game.
