Crean on connecting the APR to postseason eligibility

Tom Crean was asked earlier today about the possibility of making schools with poor APR scores ineligible for the postseason. Crean obviously has a unique perspective on the matter. His teams at Marquette had very high scores on the APR, but bad APR rates during the Mike Davis and Kelvin Sampson years — especially during the transition years — put the program in a humongous APR hole that required the Hoosiers to forfeit scholarships. It wasn’t until this past APR report, when IU scored a perfect 1000 for the 2009-10 school year, that IU finally got past the cutoff.

Under the new policy, Indiana would have been ineligible for the postseason for at least one season. The following is the explanation of the new policy by the Associated Press.

In August, the board approved raising the four-year Academic Progress Rate cutline from 900 to 930 and linking that cutline to eligibility for postseason play. On Thursday, it passed a four-year plan to phase in the new requirements.

During the first two years, 2012-13 and 2013-14, teams scoring below 900 on the four-year average would be ineligible for postseason play unless the averaged 930 on the two most recent years of data. In 2014-15, teams that do not hit the 930 mark would be ineligible unless they averaged 940 in the two most recent years. After that, everyone must hit 930, no exceptions.

Schools that do not make the grade could also face additional penalties such as reductions in practice time and game limits, coaches suspensions, scholarship reductions and restricted NCAA membership.

The legislation had not yet been passed when Crean met with the media on Monday morning, but he was asked about the idea of the legislation, which had been floated for months. He was asked if he thought it would’ve been fair if IU was ruled ineligible for postseason play last season based on the APR score he inherited.

“I will be the first to say I don’t understand the exact formula that they want to use right now if it goes to that,” Crean said. “But if it’s based on the exact scenario that you just said with Indiana, there’s no way that’s fair. Because we’ve had 1000 and we’re going to have 1000 again now that Guy-Marc Michel has signed a European contract. If Guy-Marc was not eligible to play for us like he wasn’t, he still would’ve counted against our APR score. I think I’m right on this because we were going to fight for it. I don’t know if we would’ve ever won, but the fact that he signed a contract overseas allows us not to be penalized, but there’s a flaw in the system when you’re going to be penalized for a guy that the NCAA was never going to allow to play for you. There’s probably some bugs in the system that would need to be worked out. There’s no way it’s fair for someone walking in. Our situation was certainly unique, but there’s other unique situations that maybe aren’t as dramatic that wouldn’t be fair at all, but over a period of time when you’re judged on the time you’ve been at the program and you’re judged by what you’ve done with your own program. It’s like when the graduation rates came out the other day, we were 91 percent for our time at Marquette, and yet Indiana was in the low 40s. Everytime I read about the low 40s, you know, I wasn’t here for that. … The average person that looks at that and says, ‘Well Indiana has a 47 percent rate,’ well, that wasn’t us. We were busy graduating our guys with 91 percent. It’s the same thing. Our APRs were really high at Marquette and they’ve been really high since we’ve been here. We’re still digging out of an astronomical APR hole.”

Crean was asked if there is a fair way to handle this situation.

“You’ve gotta connect it over a period of time I think. If you’re looking at the four-year scales like that, you’ve gotta connect it over a period of time. In my mind, you can’t hold it against a coach that comes in because another coach left to take a different job or because a coach was fired. There’s always going to be a system change, there’s always going to be a mindset change. It doesn’t matter if you’re replacing a champion, you’re going to do it differently. There’s always going to be people that may not like that way. You have to factor all that in. Now what is, i don’t know. But I think you have to factor that in. There’s no way you can paint it with a broad brush. There’s no way. And be fair to the student athletes especially. When there’s a coaching change, they didn’t sign up for that, but it’s a fact of life. Some are going to flourish in it, some are going to fail in it, but the bottom line is you’re trying to make it better. Now if somebody is not graduating their players and somebody is having issues for a long period of time, then yeah, they should be penalized. There’s not a lot of guys getting hired in my mind that were failing in one area in a certain place that are moving up the ladder. There are not a lot of guys bringing bad APR scores with them. You might be inheriting them, but then you’ve gotta have an opportunity to build it up like we’ve done.”

Crean was asked if, with more than 300 Division I schools, if there would always be too many unique situations to construct such a system.

“There’s gotta be a point where you can say, ‘Well this matches up because they’ve been there for a long time, but this doesn’t match up because they just started or they’re two years in, and that’s what they inherited.”

  1. I don’t have the answer but he’s obviously right. The history of the NCAA is littered with coaches and programs cleaning up the messes that someone else left behind. Let’s call it the ‘Calipari Factor’.

  2. Or maybe it could be worded something like “any situation that involves a school having been “Calipari a zided” will be handled on a case by case scenario.

Bout the only person I know of that can legitimize his name being used as something other than a proper noun.

Sometimes a shoe just fits sssoooo good.

  3. Then again, a school shouldn’t be able to wipe the slate clean and start over just because they fire their coach. This would put the onus on the college to monitor how well the coach is doing in this regard.

In hindsight, the bosses of he-who-must-not-be-named should never have let the situation deteriorate so much at IU. We can’t put all the blame on our ex head coach, the higher ups share some responsibility.

So I think it’s fair if the new coach has to pay the price for what happened at the school before him. This is incentive for the school to exercise “institutional control” and get more involved in the grades and graduation situation.

  4. Points well taken, John from Beyond. Except it is also the players, many who probably weren’t there when the academic performance was too low, that pay the price. Keeping a current team, who may score a perfect 1000, from post season play because two years before they arrived the players were goof-offs just doesn’t seem quite right either.

  5. It’s silly to punish current players and coaches for problems that may/were likely to have been caused by previous regimes. To me, a better system would be tying the APR score to the coach. So, instead of Indiana and Marquette having APR scores, Tom Crean has an APR score. Kelvin Sampson has an APR score, not Oklahoma and Indiana. And after a certain number of unacceptable years in a row, and with a fair process with plenty of oversight and opportunity for appeals for genuine special circumstances, the coaches with unacceptable APR numbers get banned for two years. Or one, or whatever is appropriate. If it’s a first-time coach, they could get two years to build a score before they’re judged.

If a certain school has a coach fail to meet standards, they have to hire from outside the program. Repeat offenders get a postseason ban.

Just an idea. If coaches could lose their jobs, and knew that their scores stayed with them beyond their school, no school in the country would struggle with it.

I don’t even like APR that much, I’d rather have an entirely new metric, but either way, it seems like this method would more effectively punish those at fault, while minimizing collateral damage.

  6. I agree with jr5. If there is a requirement for a coach, one who has graduated players is more likely to be hired than one who does not. You won’t have a university rationalizing, “Well he’ll be better here.”

I think this is necessary if the NCAA is going to continue to act as though student-athlete isn’t a farce.

  7. I for one just think this is just going to be another reason for teams to help put kids in blow off classes and get them easy grades. It’s already been done for years, and I don’t see how this is going to change that.

What’s the goal of this? To ensure the kids are doing their best in school and the program isn’t just letting them fail? Ultimately, like Crean said, it’s probably not even going to affect the kid who makes the mistake.

Hopefully Crean keeps our numbers up and it becomes a non issue for us, but things like having Guy Marc Michel count against us are what baffle me.

  8. My opinion every time I read one of CTC’s opinions is that he would bring the class average down if he were a student. The guy is a joke. Bad grammar, lousy speller on twitter, and lousy coach on the floor. After this year, many more will be saying “no mas”.

  9. Get real, please get lost. You’re like a broken record. We know you don’t like CTC, now go back to your PU blog where people might listen to you.

  10. Sure go ahead and hold current teams accountable for last year’s academics. I would suggest that recruits be expected to actually ask about the current academic scores from the recruiter BEFORE he/she commits.

Let’s see Coach Cal recruit against that.
