IU athletics posts graduation rate of 77 percent from 2001-2004

The NCAA released Graduation Success Rate numbers on Tuesday for classes that entered college from 2001-2004. Indiana’s athletic department posted a cumulative GSR of 77 percent. That’s actually below the national average of 80 percent from the period, though it should be mentioned that the national average is at an all-time high.

Four Indiana teams — women’s golf, women’ swimming, women’s soccer and women’s tennis — posted perfect scores of 100 percent during that time period. Unsurprisingly, considering the turmoil the program suffered in that period, the men’s basketball program did not perform well by the GSR criteria, posting a rate of 47. Those student athletes spent their entire careers under former coaches Mike Davis and Kelvin Sampson, of course, so there isn’t much for current coach Tom Crean to answer for. During the same period, Crean’s Marquette teams posted a 91 percent GSR.

The football team, meanwhile, posted a GSR of 66.

The release from Indiana follows.

NCAA Announces Graduate Success Rate (GSR) For 2001-2004

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Student-athletes at Indiana University who enrolled from 2001-2004 scored a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 77 percent.  In the study which was released by the NCAA today, IU’s women’s golf, women’s swimming, women’s soccer and women’s tennis team all finished with a perfect 100% score.

The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. It measures those student-athletes who have completed their degree requirements over a six-year period.   For full results of all institutions visit www.ncaa.org <http://www.ncaa.org> .  There is no corresponding measurement of the GSR for the student body as a whole.

“Second only to playing by the rules, having student-athletes who achieve academically and earn Indiana University degrees is our highest priority, said Vice-President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass.  “In pursuit of that priority, we have added academic support staff, increased tutoring services and opened a state of the art $3 million academic center:  the D. Ames Shuel Center.”

(Additional Note:  Men’s basketball coach Tom Crean’s Marquette program posted a 91% GSR for 2001-04 and averaged 23 wins a season for that four year period.)

Each spring the NCAA also releases each institution’s Academic Progress Report (APR). The APR is a metric established by the NCAA to indicate more immediately the success of collegiate athletic teams in moving student athletes towards graduation.  It was first reported in February of 2005.

This year, IU athletics saw 13, more than half, of its teams earn perfect scores, up from 10 in 2009.  Those honored were men’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s golf, men’s golf, women’s soccer, water polo, women’s tennis, men’s swimming, men’s diving, baseball, men’s tennis, volleyball and rowing.

At that time, the NCAA also recognized the IU baseball, men’s golf, men’s soccer and women’s soccer programs for their outstanding Academic Performance Program’s multi-year APR score. Each of these teams fell within the top ten percent among their respective sports.

That doubles the number of Hoosier programs that were honored with that distinction from spring, 2010.

  1. Well then, wow, any reasonable person wold have to say that CTC posted an exemplary record but, I’m certain that someone will find a way to, seemingly, show I’m wrong.

  2. Why am I remembering this story being previously posted on a Hoosier blog? Maybe it was graduation figures up to 2003….or GPA numbers? Oh well.

Chet- Do you think private schools have better overall graduation rates? Be interesting to see comparisons between private and public.

  3. Crean’s, at Marquette, was an outstanding score. I remember thinking that when they went after him in contrast to our 40+ which was abysmal and embarrassing. Crean, from that stand point seemed an outstanding choice (we tend to forget that). (I believe the reason he wasn’t 100% was that one player had left early for the NBA, thus he had not graduated within the allotted time).

A joke going around IU then was about one of the players running into Greenspan and telling him ” I got me four F and one D, what you think?

“I think you’ve been spending too much time on one subject,” answered Greenspan. “You’ve got to manage your time better.”
