  1. There’s no question Roberson is the most viable QB option on the roster. Keep playing him.

GK, meh, it was too good to be true. Now, a more pressing question is how the heck do we build a decent defense? DLine if where it all starts, and we are very poor there.

  2. Not a big deal, but the “Find us on Facebook” box overlaps the corner of your ScoopTalk session just enough to prevent opening it in full screen.

For a freshman, Roberson played pretty darn good. Nice mobility.

  3. Watching the ND game tonight know that Gunner is there is like driving by a party that you know your ex-girlfriend is at with her new boyfriend.

  4. I agree that the defense is more important than Kiel. If IU can stop (discourage?) other teams from scoring, Tre or some other quarterback will be fine. Kiel would have have spent his time at IU putting up big passing numbers (along with big interception numbers because we would always be behind) and IU would still be losing. I’ll take winning. In 1989(?) Anthony Thompson should have won the Heisman Trophy. We also lost to Purdue at home (on National TV) and didn’t go to a bowl despite a winning record. I’ll take IU success over individual success (even though I love seeing IU athletes be successful). If Wilson can put together a successful team, I don’t care if Kiel is a member of it or not.

  5. Why are you guys so confident that Gunner is not going to IU now? The only thing Gunner saw this weekend was Notre Dame lose again. I’d like to know why he was so confident that IU was his choice, and now he is not. Indiana really needs him. It doesn’t make any sense. If he doesn’t end up coming to IU, I think the Hoosier fans deserve to know the reason(s) why he gave the fan base hope and then stomped on their balls.

  6. I wish him the best wherever he plays but few things in life are more uncertain than ‘can’t miss’ quarterbacks. He’ll probably do well as he has a pretty amazing QB support system but you never know. IU will be fine at QB. That’s rarely our biggest problem.

  7. Chet is right that “can’t miss” means that often times they do miss. It will be a big disappoinment to many of us that Kiel will 99% likely not go to IU (please, how can he decommit then recommit and not come off as a flake?), but because I agree that landing Kiel was “too good to be true,” I’m just pretending it never happened and evaluating the program that way. Which means that 1) Roberson certainly looks to be the man at QB, 2) the offense is verging on respectable (+200 yds. rushing Sat. v. Iowa), 3) the huge problem is defense, 4) KW gets the benefit of the doubt as he shakes up a lousy program and current players leave, and 5) the biggest doubt about KW remains that he’s never been a head coach at a level greater than high school.

  8. Pretty exciting to have a freshman QB that looks as poised and talented as Roberson. Frankly, I’m surprised the kid is so skilled. I had not read one story about him on the Hoosier blogs. A few weeks back, I think the first person I heard on this blog suggesting he should get a shot at the starting role was JPat.

Proud of Wilson for not giving into the politics surrounding the QB position. It’s about time we have a coach at IU that refuses manipulation and will live by the solid principles he believes change can eventually blossom.

  9. For What It’s Worth…I think you are right on all three counts. Roberson looked skilled and self-assured yesterday. That was what I thought separated him from EWB, who seemed to play ‘nervous’. And Wilson seems to focus “out’ the non-coaching issues that have always seemed to hang around.

And yes, I do remember that JPat was the first individual to have stated that he thought Roberson was the top QB candidate. It is exciting.

  10. At this point, its hard to believe that Gunner decommiting had nothing to do with Dusty’s playing time. All of the rumors seemed to kick up when EWB was named the starter and Dusty was unable to supplant him despite a number of opportunities. I certainly don’t have any privileged information, it just smells like sour grapes. I have to believe that if Gunner weren’t in the mix, Tre would’ve had the chance to start a few weeks back.

  11. I believe the rumors really started to get going about the same time the Doctor Pepper machine broke down. Weasels really love Doctor Pepper, I’ve heard.

  12. Of a side note, JPat and Mike P. seem to readily have accurate evaluations of talent either around or coming to IU. All I know is after seeing TR play Saturday he certainly has tools, cool under attack or attacking and the rest of the O react positively with him leading the change. The young guys on this team are responding the best to the new staff. The D will get better or somebody(players or assistants)will be held to account after next season. After Saturdays game I have renewed hope for W’s against NW and PUke. MSU is a different story. I am afraid Boom Herron will make the Hoosiers believe he brought the end zone with him when they play OSU.

  13. HC,

Thanks for the compliment. Sometimes I do miss though. I don’t feel I know more about talent than most others on here, I just have the luxury of attending a lot of games and watching these players in game situations, not just on a highlight film or a 7 on 7 camp. I have always thought you can make any kid look like a good prospect against a clock (camps), it’s a different animal when there is a DT or LB coming to rip your head off.

I remember watching DK play in high school and thought he was a much more solid player than he has turned out to be. Honestly, watching him as a senior I was more impressed with his play than I am with Gunner the few times I seen him. That elevated play is a product of the conference Columbus East plays in. Gunner appears to have all the intangibles to develop into an elite player, though you never know.

I watched EWB play as well, in the same conference as DK and GK and was never impressed with him as a QB, but knew he is an athlete. I’m pretty sure he choose Lynch and IU cause Lynch promised him he would get the chance to be a QB here, where the other schools that wanted him for his athletic prowess but not as a QB.

Like another poster has said before on here, put GK in the MIC or CI (Indiana’s top tier football conferences), you would have a better idea of how he will play at the next level.

Roberson was good at LC, damn near won state with a mediocre supporting class last year on his way to a Mr. Football title. I think we will look real good against Northwestern, hope he survives the MSU game, and will beat Purdouche.

If he is the future at IU for QB, the day this season is over, he needs to be with the strength coach as much as possible, and go to subway and eat a sandwich or two!

  14. Mike P.,

I agree with every paragraph. I’ve missed on more that my share. As to DK I am at the least as disappointed as you. To me he performed at a higher level at East almost every game. Sometimes the positives of ability cannot overcome the negatives of the same when playing better competition(Leaf, Mandich and Bosworth experienced the same). Tre like Lewis and ARE add a twist at QB that gives the O that intangible making it competitive. If he is the one(QB)and I think he could be then I am damned happy as that is 1 part of the equation Smith, Wilson and Johns has solved( along with #12).

Looks as though Persa could be impaired if able to play at all. At this point of the FB transformation that is a plus needed for a W.

If you get a chance during the HS FB playoffs see Leo(4A). I saw them 3-4 weeks ago. Damned solid. Get on an opponent and keep them down. Play with the precision of a marching band and with D seen only once every couple of years in HS.

  15. I am curious to find out what blog system you have been using? I’m having some minor security issues with my latest website and I’d like to find something more safeguarded. Do you have any solutions?
