Wilson: Kiel, Donnell Jones, Beckum out for Saturday’s game

Indiana coach Kevin Wilson said quarterback Dusty Kiel, nickelback Donnell Jones and linebacker Leon Beckum are all out for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin. Beckum returned to practice this week after suffering a knee injury in the season opener against Ball State, but Wilson said he’s not quite ready yet. Neither Kiel nor Jones have practiced.

“Dusty, all those guys have been limited, done nothing,” Wilson said. “So the guys that didn’t finish would be out right now. … They haven’t gotten work yet. Typically, you go through all the schemes, the adjustments, the routes. Even if they’re kinda close, you miss all the work, so that’s why they’re not playing anyway.”

Wilson said redshirt sophomore quarterback Ed Wright-Baker has been healthy, which essentially clinches that he will be the starter at the position on Saturday.

Wilson said freshman tailback D’Angelo Roberts has continued to come back to health. Wilson said sophomore Stephen Houston would likely still start and get the bulk of the carries, but said that nobody has shown the capacity to hold on to the starting job.

“Those guys kind of play in cycles,” Wilson said. “One guy thinks he’s good and has energy and then another gets moody and disappointed. … I think right now Stephen’s got the initial hotter hand, but as soon as that goes, anybody who plays a good game around here doesn’t back it up the next week typically. I guess Stephen will be the next guy up and we’ll go back to Perez or somebody.”
