  1. I’m loving this team this year. The joy is back to IU bball!

That being said, this is a sports blog, so of course I have some criticism…

Anyone who played for IU the last three years deserves a gold medal; however, the days of Verdell as a starter should be done. I’m thoroughly confused as to why he is leading the team in minutes so far this year. I see him as a sixth man at best, and I really think he would produce better quality minutes if they were limited and he had to earn his playing time. The turnovers are an obvious problem, but whenever he is handling the ball, bad things usually happen. Bad defense, bad passes or missed assists, forced shots, etc. He doesn’t make his team better, he makes it worse. Sorry to say it, but that’s the way it is.

Also, the minutes that Watford gets need to be scaled back. He can usually score (not this year so much) but historically he could never score when we really needed it the most. Combine that with his terrible help defense and like Verdell, he doesn’t make the team better. I watched parts of the first game in slow motion and many of the times that other players got burned were do to him not sliding over appropriately. His footwork on D is terrible, he gets beat all the time.

So give those guys a gold medal for past time served, but they need to take a lesser role this year. Hulls can score and play the point well (he makes his teammates better), but his size is a liability on defense. That’s OK, we need him to run the point right now, he is a net gain for the team.

On the bright side, Sheeladipo are exciting, explosive, versatile, and make it just plain fun to watch IU. Zeller is Zeller. Our opponents have to pick their poison: get beat by Zeller or double team him and get beat by our outside game. 9 steals in 2 games?!? He could never score a point and still be the MVP with all that he does.

Sheeladipo, Hulls, and Zeller are the new core of this team. I would give them all the playing time they can handle, and for the remaining minutes rotate in the other scholarship players. When last year’s returning starters are in the game at the same time, we look like, well we look like last year’s team.

  2. Laffy, I liked the opening music and pics a lot too. Must have been Hugh’s thing ’cause we haven’t seen it since he left.

I had a hard time hearing Zach, too, even with the speakers turned up. Wonder why you Scoopers don’t set up like the 3 Man Weave of IDS – all sit in one row, back a little from the laptop. It’s easy to hear all of them, don’t have to keep adjusting the volume and we aren’t having to look past one huge face in front to see/hear the guy in the back.

Good analysis fellas. Liked your observations about the defense, fast break and Danny Moore. As always I appreciate hearing your take on the game and the team. Good insights from each of you three. Always like hearing from the Ginger. Have him on again, please.
