Toledo at IU women

In the end, the bad outweighed the good for Indiana on this night, as Toledo overcame the loss of point guard Naama Shafir to post the road victory. Aulani Sinclair with a stellar performance for the Hoosiers, scoring a career-high 23 points on 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line, while Georgie Jones posted another double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. ROCKETS 69, HOOSIERS 58

2:56: The answer to that last question appears to be: no. When Indiana scores, it can’t get a stop, and when it does get a stop, it can’t score. ROCKETS 59, HOOSIERS 48

7:35: Toledo just holding IU at arm’s length right now after the Hoosiers got as close as six. Does Indiana enough one more big run in it? ROCKETS 54, HOOSIERS 47

11:59: Maybe IU is finding that spark. A steal and assist from Newbauer to Sinclair just before the break and Sinclair was fouled on the play. Legette-Jack fired up, yelling at her bench and high-fiving Newbauer in hopes of lighting a fire. ROCKETS 46, HOOSIERS 38

15:57: Indiana briefly within eight, but the margin is back to 10 as both teams struggling not to turn the ball over. Hoosiers need a spark from somebody. ROCKETS 39, HOOSIERS 29

The final three minutes of the half an unmitigated disaster for Indiana. Trailing 22-21, a rash of turnovers, fouls and poor defensive rotations allowed Toledo to go on a 14-0 run before Aulani Sinclair’s three free throws with 4.9 seconds left stopped the bleeding. Many of the mistakes came from the likes of Linda Rubene, Milika Taufa and Quaneisha McCurty, just into the game late in the half.

Sinclair has 8 points to lead Indiana, which is shooting a frigid 7-of-25 (28 percent) from the field. Hoosiers also getting outrebounded, 19-14. Both teams have 13 turnovers. ROCKETS 22, HOOSIERS 19

3:49: After Indiana went in front, Toledo has regained its footing a bit thanks to freshman Inma Zanoguera of Spain, who just knocked down a 3, then a contested 15-footer as the shot clock expired. ROCKETS 22, HOOSIERS 19

7:30: Toledo clearly missing its floor leader now, committing nine straight turnovers and now going nearly seven minutes scoreless to allow Indiana to take its first lead. HOOSIERS 15, ROCKETS 13

11:58: Indiana trying to cut into what was a 10-point Toledo lead. Hoosiers still have just one field goal, a putback by Aulani Sinclair, to go with 4-of-6 at the line. Shafir just tried to return, but that lasted one possession and she’s back to the bench for treatment. ROCKETS 13, HOOSIERS 6

15:12: Not a good start for Indiana, despite the fact Toledo star Naama Shafir went down in the opening minute. Even without their point guard, Rockets dissecting the IU defense with ease. Hoosiers not generating much themselves. ROCKETS 11, HOOSIERS 3

It’s the final Black Friday special, Toledo and Indiana in a women’s basketball game at Assembly Hall. This is just the second home appearance of the season for the Hoosiers (2-2), who are still looking for some consistency coming off a loss at Miami (Ohio). Toledo won’t be an easy team to do that against. The Rockets won the postseason WNIT last season and are among the favorites in the MAC, along with perennial power Bowling Green. Toledo’s lone loss this season was to No. 18 Wisconsin-Green Bay. Updates here and on Twitter this evening.

  1. Jeremy, your comment at the 2:56 to go mark says it all. This season is heading for complete disaster. Will we win a single game in the Big Ten? Don’t count on it. The only good thing about the horror show that awaits us is that Coach Jack will be asked to seek greener pastures elsewhere. She can never say that she didn’t have her chance.
