Things to know about VCU: Pre-Press Conference edition

Press conference for Virginia Commonwealth starts in about an hour. Indiana goes after that. Some things to know about VCU before that.

— The Rams went through significant roster changes after last year’s final four. Jamie Skeen, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, graduated. So did point guard Joey Rodriguez, starting guard Ed Nixon and Brandon Rozell, the team’s top sub. Bradford Burgess, that team’s second leading scorer, returned to lead the squad and most of the Final Four team’s top subs also returned. Sophomore Juvonte Reddic became a force at power forward and junior Darius Theus took the reigns at point guard. Burgess leads the team with 13.4 points per game and also averages 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Reddic averages 10.4 points and 6.8 rebounds and Theus averages 8.7 points and 4.7 assists.

— VCU’s strength is, of course, it’s full-court pressure. The Rams cause a Division I best 17.7 turnovers per game and lead Division I in turnover margin. They have the highest turnover percentage at 27.1 percent according to and they rank 21st in the nation in defensive efficiency, allowing 0.915 points per possession. They almost always press off of made baskets and even sometimes off of misses, so they really never let up. That’s something even Tom Crean admitted is going to be something the Hoosiers haven’t seen.

  1. Jordy should just wet himself and go home. They are going to eat him alive if he touches the ball. I’m nervous as hell for the helpless runt. Start Remy in his place.

Hulls faced stronger high school defenders than what VCU will throw at him.

  2. You know, there was actually a lot more to that than the first time I wrote it….Not sure where the rest of it disappeared to. Stuff about shooting and rebounding that actually discussed weaknesses instead of just dealing with the press. Might put more up later when the stories are finished. Sorry about that.

  3. And here come the upsets…

I don’t know about you guys, but this whole “conference pride” thing is a bunch of B.S. to me… I want our rivals to go DOWN and go DOWN hard…

  4. I said I was going to regret picking Duke to go far….really need to listen to my gut more…….

  5. Nice try, Husky.

    I love my conference.

    Go Northwestern!

(Beating on the Washington Who-skies as I write this…)

  6. Beating? Nice try, Joblablah for Hillbillies.

Also, nice try claiming you love your conference. Can’t love your conference if you don’t love Indiana and their phenomenal coach.

  7. Phenomical. Coach Crean is phenomical.

It looks like the Huskies are goin to go far in the … NIT.

Where is Oregon State when you need them?

    Wow, just wow!

Where is Oregon State when you need them?
