Beckwith just misses Olympic berth

Former Indiana star Molly Beckwith missed out on an Olympic berth by just over two-tenths of a second in the 800-meter final Monday night in Eugene, Ore.

Beckwith spent much of the race camped in fourth place but made a move in the last 200 meters and was close to taking the lead on the final straightaway. However, she faded in the last 10 meters and was nipped at the line by Alice Schmidt, who took the third spot by finishing in 1:59.46, just ahead of Beckwith at 1:59.68.

Alysia Montano led wire-to-wire, taking out the first lap at 55 seconds and holding on to win the event in 1:59.08. Geena Gall surged late to take the second spot at 1:59.24.

  1. Thanks for this report. Here’s a small correction — the difference between 1:59.6 and 1:59.68 is eight-one hundredths of a second, not two-tenths — a much smaller margin and sad that Beckwith just barely got edged out!
