Xavier at IU women

A few notes of significance from the postgame press conference. IU coach Curt Miller said the team was without freshman point guard Nicole Bell due to a concussion and is trying to redshirt Jocelyn Mousty, a freshman from Eastern Pekin. But he also said 6-foot-6 sophomore Quaneisha McCurty has been suspended indefinitely from the team. That left Indiana with eight scholarship players and walk-on Andrea Mize for today’s game.

Indiana has both the will and the way to knock off Xavier this afternoon, thanks in no small part to 27 points apiece from Aulani Sinclair and Jasmine McGhee. Hoosiers won most of the hustle board stats: more steals, less turnovers, more rebounds, more blocks, more second-chance points. IU improves to 8-4, while Xavier falls to 5-6. HOOSIERS 66, MUSKETEERS 55

3:30: McGhee and Sinclair with 22 points apiece as Indiana is threatening to complete an impressive victory. HOOSIERS 54, MUSKETEERS 47

7:34: Indiana in a nearly four-minute scoring drought before a Linda Rubene free throw moments ago, still clinging to the lead. HOOSIERS 45, MUSKETEERS 43

11:32: Sasha Chaplin finally providing a third option for IU, with 6 points off the bench this half. Hoosiers keep fighting and scrapping to boost the lead. HOOSIERS 44, MUSKETEERS 37

15:28: Jasmine McGhee and Aulani Sinclair remain a two-woman wrecking crew, but other people making the little plays, like Andrea Newbauer fighting for the offensive rebound on her own free throw miss, then pitching out to Sinclair for 3. HOOSIERS 36, MUSKETEERS 32

The fouls, particularly a number of moving screens, mounted late in the half to help Xavier scrap back into the game. If the Musketeers had made their free throws (7-of-15), they’d be comfortably ahead.

Aulani Sinclair with 15 points and Jasmine McGhee 11 to account for most of the IU offense. Hoosiers shot 37.1 percent from the field. Xavier was at 40 percent, led by 8 points from Jessica Pachko. Xavier with 8 turnovers to IU’s 7. HOOSIERS 29, MUSKETEERS 28

7:21: Indiana just outworking the visitors to this point — illegal screens and all. Xavier wants to get the ball down low, with mixed reviews so far, but the challenge for IU will be defending on the block for another 27 minutes. HOOSIERS 20, MUSKETEERS 13

11:53: Aulani Sinclair with the last five Indiana points, her first of the day after scoring a career-high 34 on Sunday. Xavier shooting just 27.3 percent. HOOSIERS 12, MUSKETEERS 9

I’m at Assembly Hall for an early Friday matinee between visiting Xavier and the IU women’s basketball team. Updates here and via Twitter. Plenty of good seats to be had if you’re done with your Christmas shopping.

  1. Great win, Lady Hoosiers! I think the future is bright with Coach Miller. To already win more games than the team did all year last year is impressive with the talent deficiency they are facing.

  2. Another impressive win for the Hoosiers. Xavier is a quality program! It is so important for Jasmine McGhee to continue her offensive production for this team in support of Sinclair. There are not a lot of offesive options for this team. Their continued strong defense and hustle is what will keep this team competitive this year until more offense arrives next year. Coach Miller and his great staff has been the difference in this team from last year!

  3. Guard Candace Ussery had to came up with some solid minutes today when Nicole Bell could not play. She did just that.
The whole team played hard the entire game. This is a fun team to watch.
