Former Indiana All-American Walt Bellamy, an Olympic gold medalist and the No. 1 overall pick in the 1961 NBA draft has died at the age of 74 according to this release by the Atlanta Hawks. The Hall-of-Famer was a four-time all-star in the NBA and two-time All-American at Indiana.

  1. Very sad news. Being a mere 10 years older than me, this makes me feel my own mortality even stronger. He averaged 20.6 points and an unbelievable 15.5 rebounds per game in his 3 year career at IU. To call him a giant among men is an understatement.

  2. What sad news! Walt was not only one greatest basketball players to put on a Hoosier uniform; he was one fine and complete human being.

To you Walt, our eternal respect, friendship and love!
