IU women’s soccer advances in tourney

The Indiana women’s soccer team scored its first Big Ten Tournament win since 1996 Wednesday night, knocking off host Illinois in the quarterfinals, 5-3.

The Hoosiers (14-5-1) likely sealed an NCAA Tournament bid with the win, although two more victories and the tournament title would give them an automatic bid. Five different IU players found the back of the net in Champaign, where games were moved to on-campus turf fields due to heavy rains in order to save the game field for the semifinals and final this weekend. Lisa Nouanesengsy, Monica Melink, Rebecca Candler, Tori Keller and Lara Ross scored goals, while Kayleight Steigerwalt had two assists and Abby Smith and Veronica Ellis each had one assist.

IU plays No. 18 Nebraska, a 4-1 winner over Wisconsin, in Friday’s second semifinal at 2:30 p.m. live on the Big Ten Network.
