Top 2014 prospect Kia Nurse chooses UConn over IU

She likely would’ve been the most significant recruit in Indiana women’s basketball history, but Kia Nurse won’t be coming to Bloomington.

She’s headed to Storrs instead.

Nurse committed to Connecticut on Monday, ending a recruiting process that saw Indiana in the mix with top tier programs Penn State, Tennessee, Kentucky and, of course, UConn. Nurse is a 6-foot wing from Ontario and is considered the top prospect in Canada. Nurse recently canceled visits to Tennessee and Kentucky, leaving the Hoosiers in her top three. Indiana coach Curt Miller had an in-home visit with Nurse in September and hosted her at last year’s Hoosier Hysteria.

“It was hard, they are both solid programs,” Nurse’s father, Richard, told the New Haven Register. “Curt’s building a program and Penn State is an up and coming (program) so it was great competition.”

Miller has a decades-long relationship with the Nurse family. Kia’s aunt, the former Raquel Nurse, played at Syracuse while Miller was on staff. Raquel is married to former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb. Miller later coached Kia’s sister, Tamika, at Bowling Green during her senior season in 2009-10. It’s also worth noting that Kia’s brother, Darnell, was a first-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in this year’s NHL draft.
