IU survives with 79-76 win against Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Noah Vonleh scored 19 points, Yogi Ferrell scored 15 and Austin Etherington hit a clutch 3-pointer to lead Indiana to a 79-76 win over Penn State in front of 8,079 at the Bryce Jordan Center in a game the Hoosiers trailed by as many as 15 points.

The Hoosiers cut that advantage down to a 41-37 deficit at halftime and stayed shot for shot with Penn State down the stretch. The 3-pointer by Etherington gave the Hoosiers the lead for good and Vonleh and Ferrell each hit critical free throws in the final minutes to season the victory. The Hoosiers won despite shooting just 36.2 percent from the field.

Penn State guard D.J. Newbill led all scorers with 24 points. Forward Ross Travis had 13 points and Tim Frazier added 10, but fouled out late.

  1. 36.2% total fg%, but 60% 3-pt. shooting in the second half…Vonleh’s 3-pt. stroke continues to be a huge plus.

Also extremely efficient from the line(29-35 for 82.9%).

And was that not a huge shot from Etherington? Didn’t somebody on this blog say he should never be on the court? Solid minutes from Howard as well.

A ton of positives to take from this game. Robinson played very well too.

They actually moved the ball with far more zing and crispness around the perimeter. They actually looked well-coached today. Give credit where credit is due. Crean had them prepared.

  2. And when you’re getting that many trips to the line, the overall field goal percentages are bound to be lower. We capitalized on those 35 trips to the stripe.

  3. Why would you be a fan of a team that has a boilermaker at QB Harvard? Good win Hoosiers!! Let’s take down the badgers in ah!!
