IU women vs. Northwestern

FINAL: Northwestern 58, Indiana 52. Hoosiers shoot only 30% at the line, including 12 second-half misses. Lyndsay Leikem led Indiana with a career-high 18 points.

Gerardot follows the storyline for the night and misses two free throws with 25 seconds to go. Hoosiers 3-for-15 at the line in 2nd half. On the other end, Wildcats add a couple free throws and build their lead to 58-52 with 25.3 left.

Northwestern up 55-52 with 34.4 to go. Gassion gets a steal for Indiana at halfcourt, but is quickly fouled. Gassion misses both free throws, only adding to Indiana’s awful night at the line. Hoosiers shooting only 33% at the free throw line. 32 seconds left.

Indiana has been simply dreadful from the stripe. Hoosiers shooting only 37% (6-for-16) tonight. But wait (!), Taylor Agler answers with a 3-pointer (only IU’s 4th of the night) to cut Northwestern lead to 53-52, 1:20 to go.

Under-4: Indiana 49, Northwestern 47. Sudden momentum shift for Indiana, which gets a layup from Taylor Agler and a 3 from Lyndsay Leikem to go with back-to-back stops.

Under-8: Northwestern 43, Indiana 40. IU, shooting only 17% in second half, has gone almost 4 minutes without a field goal.

Under-12: Indiana 36, Northwestern 36. Larryn Brooks draws a foul before the break. She’s only 2-for-11 from floor, 0-for-5 from 3. Indiana out-rebounding Northwestern, 37-29. 15 of those Hoosier boards have come on the offensive end.

Under-16: Indiana 34, Northwestern 32. Hoosiers have missed two layups and a 3 by McBride in last minute-plus. Miller was clearly angered.

Larryn Brooks finally on the board for Indiana. She cuts past her defender and receives a nice pass from Simone Deloach for the layup. It boosts IU’s lead to 31-28. A shot clock violation on the other end leads to a timeout.

HALFTIME: Indiana 29, Northwestern 28. Lyndsay Leikem and her career-high 13 points have been a big bright spot for Hoosiers. Indiana shooting only 32 percent from the field and only 16 percent (2-for-12) from the perimeter. Indiana’s 3-point shooting has been among its worst of the season. Only three other times has IU shot worse — each of those occasions came when the Hoosiers failed to hit a single shot on the perimeter.
Rounding out the scoring for IU, Simone Deloach has seven for Indiana. Larryn Brooks is scoreless on three attempts, two from 3-point range. Northwestern, which hasn’t returned Nia Coffey since losing her midway through the first half, is shooting 31 percent. Lauren Douglas leads the Wildcats with 12 points.

Under-4: Indiana 25, Northwestern 24: Lyndsay Leikem is up to 9 points in 10 minutes for Indiana.

Under-8: Indiana 20, Northwestern 18. Both teams shooting around 35% in this one. Hoosiers have connected on only 1-of-7 3-pointers. 14 of the Hoosiers’ points have come in the paint. IU outrebounding Northwestern, 19-13.

Under-12: Indiana 16, Northwestern 14. Indiana marches back on a 3 by McBride and a layup from Leikem on a beautiful dish by McBride. Milika Taufa checked in for Deloach at the 13:37 mark. Deloach has 7 of IU’s 9 points. Her season high is 10. Scary moment for Northwestern just before the timeout as freshman star Nia Coffey goes down under the basket with an apparent ankle injury. She walked off the court with assistance and is being tended to on the edge of the Wildcats’ bench.

Under-16: Northwestern 6, Indiana 5. Hoosiers shooting only 2-of-9 early and have missed all 3 3-point attempts. Deloach leads IU with 3pts.

PREGAME: After spending four of the last five games on the road during a brutal 11-day stretch, Indiana returns to Assembly Hall to host Northwestern at 7 p.m. The youth of both programs is expected to be on display tonight. Northwestern, owners of a top-20 2013 recruiting class, start three freshmen including 6-foot-1 rising star Nia Coffey (16.1 points, 8.3 rebounds per game). Indiana has started five freshmen in each of its last three games, so we’ll see if that trend continues tonight for Curt Miller’s Hoosiers.

Northwestern lineup: F Nia Coffey, F Alex Cohen, G Ashley Deary, G Christen Inman, G Maggie Lyon.
Indiana lineup: F Simone Deloach, F Tabitha Gerardot, G Alexis Gassion, G Taylor Agler, G Larryn Brooks.
