Larryn Brooks, Simone Deloach earn weekly honors from Big Ten

A good day for the Indiana women’s basketball program became better Monday afternoon with news that the Big Ten recognized Larryn Brooks as its Freshman of the Week and included reserve forward Simone Deloach on its weekly honor roll.

It’s the second time this season Brooks has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. She led Indiana with 20 points and a career-high nine assists in an 86-84 victory over then-No. 22 Iowa on Thursday. Brooks has five 20-point games this season, the most among Big Ten freshmen. She also leads all conference freshmen in scoring with 263 points, while averaging 18.8 points per game.

“(I’m) happy that Larryn gets some individual recognition,” IU coach Curt Miller said. “She’s the leading freshman scorer in the league and top five in the nation and she has gotten very little recognition from the conference in terms of player of the week honors. I’m happy that her outstanding performance versus a ranked team has brought recognition to her. She’s taken over being the face of the program and she brings a lot of energy to our program. She’s really had an outstanding year, so I’m happy that she gets the individual accolades that she’s certainly earned.”

Deloach came off the bench to post her second consecutive double-double in the win over the Hawkeyes. She tied her season high with 10 points and set a new season high with 14 rebounds. Deloach also tied career marks with three blocks and three steals against Iowa.

“Simone has worked really hard and has really impacted us off the bench,” Miller said. “It’s nice to see a bench player rewarded with that honor today and being mentioned among the best weekly performances of any player in the Big Ten. We don’t win that game without her contributions off the bench.”

  1. So very proud of our team. Well deserved accolades. And I’m also happy not to be on a bus travelling to Purdue today! Hope a large crowd comes out on Saturday when we play OU. Spread the word to your friends; this is a wonderful team to watch. I like the mantra: no drama. Put it all out on the court.

  2. The emergence of the excellent play by our bigs this year is the result of excellent coaching! When you consider that these girls ( Chaplin, DeLoach, Taufa) have been here for 4 years and in Chaplin’s case 6 years, the previous coaching staff had no clue as to how to improve these 3 girl’s game. Now that we have a tremendous coaching staff on hand and players hungry to learn, the results are as such! This team will continue to improve because of these excellent coaches! I said it 2 years ago when AD Glass hired Curt Miller that things would change dramatically and it has come to fruition! Go Hoosiers!
