Indiana beats Texas Tech 1-0 in season opener

Indiana senior left hander Joey DeNato gave up just three hits and struck out three batters in six shutout innings to lead the No. 3 Hoosiers to a 1-0 win over Texas Tech in their season opener in Lubbock, Texas.

DeNato threw just 66 pitches before coming out for reliever Scott Effross. Effross gave up just one hit and struck out two batters in two shutout innings. Senior Ryan Halstead then threw a perfect ninth inning, striking out the last better for his IU record 23rd career save.

Indiana scored its only run in the first inning. Center fielder Will Nolden led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout by catcher Kyle Schwarber and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Sam Travis.
