IU women vs. Michigan

FINAL: Michigan 70, Indiana 58. Hoosiers drop their 3rd in a row. Seems they missed a good opportunity to seal postseason trip tonight. Michigan’s Shannon Smith led all scorers with 23 points. Tabitha Gerardot led Indiana with a season-high 22 points. Taylor Agler and Larryn Brooks were a combined 3-for-17 for 9 points. Indiana shot 36% for the night. After hitting 5 3-pointers in the first half, Hoosiers were only 1-for-13 from beyond the arc in 2nd half. More to come.

Under-4: Michigan 65, Indiana 54. There will come a day when IU won’t miss handfuls of shots inside 5 feet. This is not that day. Michigan shooting well in the second half, hitting 14 of its 25 shots (56 percent). Indiana shooting only 30 percent in the second half, 36 percent for the game.

Under-8: Michigan 56, Indiana 48. Hoosiers not happy with a couple recent fouls against Sasha Chaplin. IU has trailed by 12 pts moments ago. You’ll remember, this is an important one for IU. This would be a very quality win for team’s postseason resume. Hoosiers need a W.

Under-16: Michigan 37, Indiana 36. Wolverines, as expected, dominating points in the paint, 26-14.

Michigan opens second half on an 11-2 run, takes a 37-34 lead in the first 3:31. Wolverines 4-for-4 from field, Hoosiers 1-for-5 w/ 2 turnovers.

HALFTIME: Indiana 32, Michigan 26. Hoosiers surged ahead with three straight 3s to close the half. Tabitha Gerardot has 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Indiana, which didn’t hit its first 3 until the 8:48 mark, has 5 3s at the break. IU shooting 43% (13-for-30) after rough start.

Under-4: Tabitha Gerardot gives IU the 23-22 lead with back-to-back layups. She’s 5-of-7. Rest of team is 5-for-17. 3:22 to play in 1st half.

Under-8: Michigan 20, Indiana 14. Hoosiers ugly offensively. Sasha Chaplin just committed the most obvious travel in history of the game. Tabitha Gerardot is 3-for-5 with 6 points, while the rest of the team is 3-for-13. Hoosiers have only one 3-pointer and it didn’t come until the 8:38 mark of the half.

Under-12: Michigan 13, Indiana 8. Not a great start for Indiana — 4 turnovers, shooting 26%, not getting back on defensive quick enough.

Under-16: Indiana 4, Michigan 4. Teams are a combined 4-of-16 from the field to start the game.

PREGAME: Assembly Hall is open for business one day after a piece of metal facing fell from the top of the wall along the ceiling near the north end zone. The Indiana women’s team is set to host Michigan at 7 p.m. A win over the Wolverines would be another positive step toward a postseason bid for the Hoosiers, who have only three regular season games remaining after tonight. IU coach Curt Miller has said that he believes the team needs only another win or two to clinch at least a WBI or WNIT tournament bid.

Anyway, it’s an awkward environment at Assembly Hall tonight, with the bleachers in both end zones pushed up and a large piece of machinery behind the basket in the south end zone. Here’s a picture:

Just feels … Weird.

INDIANA lineup: F Simone Deloach, F Tabitha Gerardot, G Taylor Agler, G Larryn Brooks, G Alexis Gassion.
MICHIGAN lineup: F Cyesha Goree, F Val Driscoll, G Nicole Elmblad, G Shannon Smith, G Siera Thompson.
