IU women vs. Penn State

FINAL: No. 11 Penn State 71, Indiana 63. Tough one for the Hoosiers, who were right there for much of the night. Maggie Lucas scores a game-high 32 points for Penn State. Larryn Brooks led IU with 16. Simone Deloach with 13 points, 15 rebounds.

Deloach can’t convert a three-point play, but brings IU within 4 with 40 seconds to play.

Penn State called for 3 seconds with 1:30 to go, and Brooks gets a layup on 2nd chance. IU trails 67-61 with 1:03 to play.

Under-4: Penn State 62, Indiana 55. Hoosiers 8-for-31 (25%) from 3 tonight. Lions at 49% from the field. Maggie Lucas up to 25 points.

Indiana has only one field goal in last 6+ minutes, as Penn State takes a 62-53 lead with 4:42 to go. You can feel this one slipping away.

Penn State mounts a mini run to take lead, but Simone Deloach gets a putback to fall and cut IU deficit to 56-52 with 8:22 to go. Deloach having a huge (much-needed) game for Indiana tonight. 11 points and 12 rebounds. She has been, without question, the best post player on the floor tonight.

Under-12: Indiana 50, Penn State 48. Nicole Bell has given IU some good time tonight. Bell has 6 points in 6 mins.

So, it’s a 16-7 run to start the 2nd half for Indiana. 7 of those points from Tabitha Gerardot, who’s 3-for-3 from field. IU up 47-44, 12:31

Crowd at Assembly Hall on their feet after Larryn Brooks splits 2 defenders for a transition layup. Hoosiers up 39-37 on No. 11 Lions. 16:44

HALFTIME: Penn State 37, Indiana 31. Maggie Lucas has 16 points for PSU. Larryn Brooks leads IU with 10. Hoosiers are, miraculously, out-rebounding Nittany Lions, 22-19. 9 of those on the offensive glass.

Under-4: Penn State 32, Indiana 27. Penn State led by as many as 10 at 7:37 mark. Larryn Brooks has found the basket with the floater. She has 10 points.

Under-8: Penn State 26, Indiana 18. Two things keeping IU close: 5 3-pointers, 15 rebounds (eight offensive). The Lions and their zone are giving IU nothing inside. Maggie Lucas already has 14 points. She makes the gimmes and the tough shots. She’s 5-of-7. Again, she’s really, really good.

Under-12: Penn State 20, Indiana 16. Hoosiers’ perimeter shooting keeping it close. IU 5-for-12 from 3, 5-for-17 from field. You must remember that Indiana chucked 30 3s against Penn State last month. It’s a nice weapon to have when it’s working. And it’s working for the Hoosiers early on. But you simply can’t rely on that for 40 minutes.

Under-16: Penn State 9, Indiana 7. The Lions’ offense has consisted solely of Maggie Lucas because she’s really, really good. She’s perfect from the field with all nine points. It’s early, but IU has to be encouraged by its rebounding. Hoosiers have 4 (3 offensive) to PSU’s 3.

PREGAME: Indiana has worked its way into the NCAA Tournament discussion and a win tonight against Penn State would go a long, way toward bolstering the Hoosiers’ postseason resume. So, yes. Tonight is a big, big opportunity for Indiana at Assembly Hall. Of course, Penn State is always tough. Facing the Nittany Lions means contending with their extraordinary length and size and, of course, going up against Maggie Lucas, the Big Ten’s Preseason Player of the Year. Lucas, a senior who leads the Lions with 21.0 points per game, has seen considerable success against Indiana over her career. In five games against the Hoosiers, Lucas is averaging 19.2 points and 3.8 rebounds. She’s also connected on 40 percent of her shots from the field and 44 percent of her 3-point attempts. She scored a co-game-high 18 points in last month’s 65-52 win over Indiana in State College.
