Michigan at Indiana, Game 1

Top 9th: Scott Effross surrendered a pair of singles to start the inning, putting runners on first and third with no outs, but he stranded two runners on. He got a grounder back to the box and two strikeouts to get the save. Indiana wins 5-3.

Bottom 8th: Indiana got a leadoff single from third baseman Dustin DeMuth and center fielder Tim O’Conner reached on an error, but the Hoosiers stranded their 15th and 16th runners of the game. IU still leads 5-3.

Top 8th: Scott Effross breezed through a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. IU still leads 5-3.

Bottom 7th: IU scored a run on a fielder’s choice on an hard grounder by second baseman Casey Rodrigue with the bases loaded but failed to get another run across and stranded the bases loaded. IU leads 5-3 but left several more runs on the board.

Top 7th: Will Coursen-Carr came out after surrendering a single to center fielder Jackson Glines. Right-hander Scott Effross came on and struck out the first batter he faced, but allowed a single to Kyle Jusick that put runners on first and third. Second baseman Casey Rodrigue made an outstanding running play on a flare over his head to end the inning. IU still leads 4-3.

Bottom 6th: Sam Travis reached on an error and Scott Donley singled in the sixth, but the Hoosiers failed to get a run across and they cling to a 4-3 lead.

Top 6th: After five scoreless innings, Michigan finally got to Joey DeNato and nearly took the lead. Michigan first baseman Kendall Patrick led off with a double, then left fielder Kyle Jusick drew a walk. Right fielder Jackson Lamb lined a single to deep center field to bring home Patrick. Designated hitter Carmen Bendetti brought in a run with a groundout to first base to make it 4-2. DeNato came out for Luke Harrison. Third baseman Ramsey Romano then laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to bring home Lamb, who had stolen third base. Harrison got a groundout, but then came out for left-hander Will Coursen Carr, who struck out Travis Maezes to end the inning and preserve it at 4-3.

Bottom 5th: Indiana’s run in the fifth came on a broken bat sacrifice fly. Yes this is college baseball, and yes there are metal bats.

Third baseman Dustin DeMuth led off the inning with a single and left fielder Casey Smith followed with a walk. After a failed bunt attempt by right fielder Will Nolden, center fielder Tim O’Conner drew another walk to load the bases. Shortstop Nick Ramos hit a fly ball to left that split his metal bat in two with one half sailing toward the Indiana dugout before landing harmlessly. DeMuth scored on the fly ball to make it 4-0 Indiana.

Top 5th: Joey DeNato earned his 244th career strikeout in the fifth, tying him for the all-time career record at Indiana. He also walked a batter and allowed Michigan center fielder Jackson Glines to hit a 380 foot fly ball that came down just in front of the wall, but was caught by Tim O’Conner. IU still leads 3-0.

Bottom 4th: IU second baseman Casey Rodrigue led off the fourth with a drag-bunt single. He stole second before catcher Kyle Schwarber walked. However, Rodrigue was thrown out trying to steal third and the next two hitters flied out to end the inning. IU leads 3-0.

Top 4th: DeNato cruised through his first 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout and two groundouts. IU leads 3-0.

Bottom 3rd: Dustin DeMuth, Casey Smith and Tim O’Conner were all hit by pitches in the third, but right fielder Will Nolden fouled out attempting to bunt and shortstop Nick Ramos grounded to a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. IU still leads 3-0.

Top 3rd: Joey DeNato gave up a two-out walk and Michigan left fielder Kyle Jusick followed that with what ordinarily would’ve been a single up the middle. The Hoosiers just so happened to be shifted far to the left, however, and shortstop Nick Ramos was right behind the bag at second base. He stepped on the bag to end the inning. IU still leads 3-0.

Bottom 2nd: IU left fielder Casey Smith led off the second with a double to left, his first extra base hit of the year. Right fielder Will Nolden walked, and after two outs, second baseman Casey Rodrigue crushed a triple that one-hopped the right-field wall and scored Smith and Nolden. After a walk to catcher Kyle Schwarber, first baseman Sam Travis singled through the hole between third and short to score Rodrigue. IU leads 3-0 after two.

Top 2nd: Joey DeNato walked a pair of batters and gave up a one-out single to Ramsey Romano to load the bases, but got Michigan catcher Cole Martin to pop to center field and Travis Maeszes to strike out to end the threat. Scoreless through 1 1/2.

Bottom 1st: Indiana’s Kyle Schwarber and Sam Travis drew one-out walks, but designated hitter Scott Donley popped up to short and Dustin DeMuth grounded to short to end the inning. Scoreless after 1.

Top 1st: Michigan shortstop Travis Maeszes led off with a double to deep left center field, but IU’s Joey DeNato struck out the next two batters and got the third to fly out to left. 0-0 after a half inning.
