WNIT live blog: IU women vs. Marquette

FINAL: Indiana 72, Marquette 69. Hoosiers survive another thriller to advance to the Sweet 16 of the WNIT. So many plot twists in the final few seconds, but Indiana somehow finds a way to hold on. Larryn Brooks finishes with 33 points for Indiana. Alexis Gassion added 11. IU will play the winner of IUPUI and Northwestern. They play at 3 p.m. Sunday. Should know after that game when and where the Hoosiers play next.

Taylor Agler loses the ball under the basket with 16 seconds left, Marquette’s Katie Young takes it length of floor for layup. 70-69 IU, :10

Marquette has been within a possession of tying on a couple of occasions in the last few moments. The teams are trading 3s, including the most recent one by Marquette’s Katie Young. Golden Eagles again with three points, as Indiana leads 70-67 with 40.8 seconds to play.

Under-4: Indiana 64, Marquette 59. Golden Eagles have cut it to a 2-possession game for first time since, well, the opening minutes. Hoosiers’ last 5 shots have been 3-point attempts. They’ve missed each of them.

Under-8: Indiana 62, Milwaukee 48. Golden Eagles playing better, but Hoosiers not losing steam. Simone Deloach got a huge ovation after coming out with 8:30 to go. Deloach with 4 points, 3 rebounds, a block and a steal in second half.

Under-12: Indiana 54, Marquette 39. Nearly ever statistical category even through the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half. Both teams shooting 33 percent in 2nd half. Eight rebounds for Marquette, six for Indiana. Each team also has six points in paint, three turnovers in the half.

Under-16: Indiana 50, Marquette 39. Golden Eagles have outscored Hoosiers 13-9 through first 5:29 of half.

HALFTIME: Indiana 41, Marquette 26. Larryn Brooks has 22 points for IU. Most first-half points since dropping 43 on Illinois on Feb. 22. Hoosiers shooting 57 percent (16-of-28). They’ve held Katherine Plouffe scoreless from the field. She has only 2 points, 4 rebounds. Indiana and Marquette each have 15 rebounds. Golden Eagles 2nd in nation with plus-13.3 rebounding margin.

Under-4: Indiana 36, Marquette 19. Hoosiers outrebounding best rebounding team in nation, 13-11. Larryn Brooks picked up her 20th point on a baseline jumper at the 5:22 mark. She’s 8-for-11 from the field.

Under-8: Indiana 34, Marquette 12. Marquette is absolutely clueless on defense. Brooks has 18 so far for the Hoosiers. Indiana is shooting 14-of-19 (73%) from the field. Brooks is 7-of-9 with 3 3s. Hoosiers have 13 points off 8 turnovers. Brooks appears to be well on her way to hitting her career high of 37 points set against Virginia Tech in Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Under-12: Indiana 22, Marquette 7. Hoosiers have 10 points off 6 Marquette turnovers #IUwbb is shooting 9-for-13 (69%). Larryn Brooks has 13 to lead all scorers. For as well as Indiana has played — and it’s played really, really well — Marquette has offered some bad, bad basketball. Golden Eagles have missed wide open layups and taken some questionable shots. Not a good showing from the visitors in blue.

Under-16: Indiana 12, Marquette 0. Hoosiers couldn’t have asked for better start. 4 Golden Eagle turnovers have helped. IU shooting 83 percent (5-of-6). Marquette’s size hasn’t stopped Indiana from attacking either. Hoosiers have 6 points in paint.

Early 7-0 lead for Indiana, as Marquette calls time after an Alexis Gassion 3. Hoosiers 3-of-4 from field to start.

PREGAME: Tall task on deck for Indiana. Literally. A large and imposing Marquette team is in Bloomington tonight for a WNIT second-round matchup against the Hoosiers. The Golden Eagles are led by 6-foot-3 senior forward Katherine Plouffe, who’s coming off a WNIT-record 26 rebounds Thursday at Indiana State. Plouffe is averaging a double-double for the season with 17.6 points and 10.3 boards per contest.

Marquette is among the best rebounding teams in the nation. The Golden Eagles are second in Division I with a plus-13.3 rebounding margin, while averaging 45.7 rebounds per contest.

“We’ll have to box out and be physical all night long to come away with a win,” Miller said on his pregame #MillerCam Instagram video.

  1. Great game and such an amazing amount of growth in this young team. Just two years removed from a season in which they were 6-24, they have made it to the third round of the WNIT. Congratulations to the team and to the coaching staff. They have all done an amazing job!

  2. A really good victory over a very good team. Marquette is the second best rebounding team in the nation out rebounding their opponents by 13 a game. We were only out rebounded by 3 in a great effort by this young team. Marquette’s Katherine Plouffe who was averaging 17 points a game was held to 4 points by Tabitha Gerardot and her team mates. Although IU had a 22 point lead at one time, you knew that Marquette was not going away. When the game got real close they made the plays down the stretch to pull out the tough win. This young team continues to grit out close games. 20 wins on the season is a great accomplishment for this team and this terrific coaching staff. A very boisterous crowd was a very nice help in this close game! Keep coming out Hoosier nation if we get another home game. Go Hoosiers!
