DeNato Named B1G co-Pitcher of the Week

Third career conference honor for senior southpaw

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana senior pitcher Joey DeNato shared Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. DeNato has claimed the award three times in his career and twice this season (Feb. 18).

The left-hander threw eight scoreless innings and limited Michigan State to five hits to go along with five punchouts and three walks on in the Hoosiers victory on Friday evening. He became the program’s all-time innings king (324.0), adding to his record wins (32) and strikeouts (262) totals to go along with his 32-9 record and 2.69 ERA.

DeNato is 8-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 2014. He has won his last five decisions, including each of his four league starts. In Big Ten play, DeNato is 4-0 with a 2.39 ERA in 26.1 innings of work.

IU’s pitching staff, which leads the conference with a 2.52 ERA, surrendered just two earned runs in 30 innings against the Spartans and has allowed that same number in its last 41 innings of work. In four games last week, all victories, the staff logged a 0.45 ERA, 26 hits, 25 strikeouts and 15 walks in 40 frames.

The Hoosiers lead the Big Ten with an 11-1 mark and sit at 25-11 overall. They wrap up their nine-game homestand with a 6:05 p.m. Wednesday showdown with Ball State and return to league action at Illinois on Friday-Sunday (7 p.m., 4 p.m., 2 p.m.).
