Top 8th: Thomas Belcher gave up a hit and a walk, but got through the eighth unscathed and IU leads 6-0, three outs away from a win in the opening game of the series.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Bottom 7th: Casey Rodrigue walked to start the seventh, went to third on a double by Kyle Schwarber then scored on an infield single by Sam Travis. IU had a chance to pile on more runs, but Austin Cangelosi struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning. IU leads 6-0.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Top 7th: Joey DeNato gave up a two-out single, but that was the only mark against him in the seventh. He struck out his seventh batter and hit the 100 pitch mark for the game. IU leads 5-0.

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

Bottom 6th: Nick Ramos got a one out single in the sixth, but was erased when Tim O’Conner grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end it. IU still leads 5-0.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Top 6th: Joey DeNato gave up a single and a walk to start the sixth, but got a 4-6-3 double play and a flyout to left to end the inning. IU still leads 5-0.

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Bottom 5th: Kyle Schwarber led off the fifth with a single and Scott Donley drew a walk but both were stranded in the fifth. IU still leads 5-0.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Top 5th: Brad Hartong helped bail Joey DeNato out of a jam in the fifth. DeNato gave up singles to Purude’s Kyle Upp and Jeff Evak and they advanced to third on a ground ball. Purdue shortstop Brandon Kieg hit one very deep to left, but Hartong made a leaping catch on it to save extra bases if not a three-run home run to end the inning. IU leads 5-0. DeNato has  thrown 79 pitches through five.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Bottom 4th: Indiana ended Purdue starter Connor Podkul’s day in fourth. After a leadoff single by Dustin DeMuth, left fielder Brad Hartong roped a double to the left center field gap that brought DeMuth home. That brought right-hander Mike Lutz in for Podkul. Hartong went to third on a deep flyout by Will Nolden, then scored on a single to center by IU shortstop Nick Ramos that fell just in front of center fielder Kyle Johnson. IU leads 5-0.

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

Top 4th: DeNato cruised through a 1-2-3 inning on nine pitches, and now has 60 on the game. IU leads 3-0.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Bottom 3rd: Casey Rodrigue and Kyle Schwarber led off the third with singles, but Sam Travis grounded into a 5-4-3 double play and Scott Donley grounded out to end the inning. IU leads 3-0.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Top 3rd: Joey DeNato has allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base in all three innings, and picked him off twice. This time it wasn’t his fault, as IU third baseman Dustin DeMuth skipped  a throw to first base on a ground ball by Purdue’s Jeff Evak to allow him to reach on an error, but DeNato made a great move to pick him off. DeNato would walk a batter later in the inning, but still got out of it unscathed. IU leads 3-0.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Bottom 2nd: Connor Podkul shook off a three-run first inning and retired the bottom of the Indiana order 1-2-3 in the second. IU still leads 3-0.

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Top 2nd: Joey DeNato walked the first batter he faced in the second and fell behind the third batter he faced 3-1, but still got through the second facing four hitters. The Hoosiers lead 3-0.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Bottom 1st: IU jumped on Purdue’s Connor Podkul in the first. Casey Rodrigue ripped a double that one-hopped the right field wall to get it started. Kyle Schwarber followed by ripping a single to center field that brought Rodrigue home. With one out, Scott Donley smacked a double to the left center field gap that scored Schwarber from first to make it 2-0. After a groundout by Dustin DeMuth moved Donley to third, left fielder Brad Hartong lined a single over the shortstop’s head to bring in Donley to make it 3-0 Indiana after one.

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Top 1st: Joey DeNato gave up a leadoff single to Purdue’s Brandon Krieg, but eventually picked him off at first, registering his 10th pickoff of the season. He then struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning. Scoreless after a half.
