Purdue at Indiana, Game 2

Top 9th: Scott Effross surrendered doubles to Purdue’s Kyle Wood and Kyle Johnson to start the ninth with Johnson’s scoring Wood from second to make it 7-2. johnson then scored when IU right fielder Will Nolden misplayed Purdue third baseman Jack Picchiotti’s single to right, which made it 7-3. Right after that, however, Purdue’s Jeff Evak flied to center to end the game. IU wins 7-3 and improves to 31-12 on the year, 15-2 in the Big Ten.

Bottom 8th: Indiana went down 1-2-3 in the eighth. IU leads 7-1 heading into the ninth.

Top 8th: Jake Kelzer struck out the first two batters he faced in relief, then got Purdue catcher Sean McHugh to pop up to end the inning. IU leads 7-1.

Bottom 7th: Purdue’s Matt Gibbs retired the side in order, striking out Nick Ramos to end the inning. IU leads 7-1.

Top 7th: Luke Harrison gave up a single to start the seventh but retired the next three batters in order. IU still leads 7-1.

Bottom 6th: Sam Travis drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single, then scored on a single by Scott Donley to give Indiana a 6-1 lead. Nick Ramos and Casey Rodrigue doubled to start the inning with Ramos having to hold at third when Rodrigue hit a fly ball off the center field wall. Purdue’s Jordan Minch intentionally walked Kyle Schwarber to load the bases then left th mound of Joe Eichmann. Travis was the only batter Eichmann faced. IU leads 7-1.

Top 6th: Christian Morris left the game after giving up his first hit and first run of the day. Purdue’s Brandon Krieg started the sixth by hitting a grounder past IU second baseman Casey Rodrigue, which was ruled an error. He went to second on the error and to third on a deep flyout by Purdue second baseman Cody Strong. Catcher Sean McHugh grounded a single past IU shortstop Nick Ramos to score Krieg. Luke Harrison stepped in after that. McHugh was thrown out trying to steal. Purdue first baseman Kyle Wood ripped a single to right, but Harrison struck out Kyle Johnson to end the inning. IU leads 4-1.

Bottom 5th: Indiana scored two runs in the fifth on basepath aggression. IU catcher Kyle Schwarber stole second base after a walk, went to third on a groundout by Scott Donley, then scored on a safety squeeze by third baseman Dustin DeMuth. DeMuth went to third when Brad Hartong ripped a single into the left center field gap, then scored on a double steal that totally baffled Purdue left-hander Jordan Minch. IU goes up 4-0.

Top 5th: Christian Morris retired the side in order for a third straight inning. Jeff Evak went down looking on an 89 mile per hour fastball on the outside corner to end the inning. Morris has retired 10 straight and 12 of the last 13 hitters he’s faced.

Bottom 4th: Brad Hartong drew a walk to start the fourth, went all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Will Nolden when Purdue didn’t cover the third base bag and then scored on a line drive single up the middle by Nick Ramos to give Indiana a 2-0 lead.

Top 4th: Christian Morris retired the Purdue side in order again, this time on eight pitches. He’s thrown 13 in the last two after throwing 40 in the first two.

Bottom 3rd: Kyle Schwarber ripped a double to the right center field gap, then scored when Scott Donley doubled to almost the exact same spot. IU takes a 1-0 lead.

Top 3rd: Christian Morris retired the side on five pitches in the third. He’s at 45 for the game. Still scoreless.

Bottom 2nd: Will Nolden reached on a bloop single in the second, but he was the only IU batter to reach base against Jordan Minch in the second. Scoreless after two.
