Butler at Indiana men’s soccer

FINAL IN OVERTIME: INDIANA 0, BUTLER 0. A tie and the Hoosiers continue to create chances but not goals, out-shooting the Bulldogs 21-10, after having had a 20-6 shot advantage in a 1-0 loss Saturday to Penn State. Indiana had very tough fortune a minute into the first overtime as BU’s Andy Holte made a miraculous near-post save on a Grant Lillard point-blank header, then saw Derek Creviston’s rebound catch the post and bounce across the face of goal without going in.

END FIRST OVERTIME: 0-0: Indiana now has 18-9 shot advantage but no result.

9:00: Massive IU flurry off corner-kick. Grant Lillard header goes off the keeper, then Creviston rebound off the near post, then shot blocked, then shot over crossbar.

END REGULATION PLAY: INDIANA 0, BUTLER 0. We are headed to extra time. That is 36 shots and five on-goal and zero goals in the past two games for Indiana. Haven’t gotten enough attempts on frame.

7:03: 0-0. Indiana’s Trevor Swartz flies into the box as BU keeper Holte misses a cross, but Swartz whiffs in front of empty net. One of the night’s very best chances. Good hustle by Swartz, but just couldn’t find a way to get an appendage on the ball.

Inside 14 minutes to play. Still scoreless. One mistake, either way, could obviously decide it now.

26:29 to play: Another near-goal IU. Tanner Thompson made a great run right down the middle and his blast caromed hard off the hands of Butler keeper Andy Holte, and then IU’s Brad Shaw couldn’t keep the rebound inside the far post.

28:29: Femi can’t get it on goal off a tremendous cross into the box from Brad Shaw. Still 0-0.

Indiana-Butler still scoreless, 31:08 to play. Hoosiers applying good pressure early in the second half, to no avail.

39:00 to play: Butler’s Vincent Mitchell has a breakaway, but IU keeper Colin Webb cut down the angle and saved easily.

HALFTIME: INDIANA 0, BUTLER 0. Pretty pedestrian half. Indiana has 8 shots to Butler’s six at halftime, but BU’s were perhaps the more dangerous.

17:34: Butler suddenly looking very dangerous. Eric Leonard’s right-footed blast blocked by IU keeper Colin Webb, creating a corner-kick that produced a very close header by Zach Steinberger.

19:53: Near-goal Butler. David Goldsmith nearly gets to the near post for a cross from Vincent Mitchell. Still scoreless at IU.

23:00: Indiana has tried a couple of long-range shots lately, well-struck by Vollmer and Thompson, but wide. IU-Butler scoreless 22 minutes in.

30:00: First 15 minutes uneventful. One shot apiece, both left-footers that went wide-left, from IU’s Jamie Vollmer (who started his college career at Butler) and  BU’s David Goldsmith.

PREGAME: Indiana has some rather haunting memories from its last men’s soccer match against Butler Bulldogs. The Hoosiers blew a two-goal lead in the final two minutes and fell to the Bulldogs, 3-2 in overtime, last fall. IU had a series of painful overtime defeats in 2013, but perhaps none more galling from its point of view.

Butler enters tonight’s play at 2-2-2 but with a potent attack up front. Indiana has hung its hat on defense through a 3-1-1 start, scoring just four goals total so far.

The No. 14-ranked Hoosiers are coming off their first loss, 1-0 Saturday in the Big Ten opener against Penn State, but IU coach Todd Yeagley felt that might have been his squad’s strongest overall performance to date. IU outshot the Nittany Lions, 20-6, but will still need to prove it can put the ball into the net with more regularity. Perhaps with that in mind, Femi Hollinger-Janzen is starting at striker tonight in place of Andrew Oliver.
