Covington at QB2, injury fill-ins on latest Indiana depth chart

There’s nothing major to report on this week’s Indiana depth chart, save for a few changes to the second team.

At quarterback, freshman Chris Covington is listed as the definitive backup to Nate Sudfeld. Previously, both Zander Diamont and Nate Boudreau occupied the second spot. Defensively, the Hoosiers lost backup cornerback Kenny Mullen and linebacker Marcus Oliver to season-ending ACL injuries last weekend at Missouri. Greg Gooch will take Oliver’s backup job behind David Cooper and Donovan Clark is in for Mullen as Tim Bennett’s backup.

On special teams, Aaron Del Grosso and Griffin Oakes are both listed as No. 1 kickers. On Monday, IU coach Kevin Wilson was non-committal about a kicker moving forward, but my read on the situation is that it’s Oakes’ job to lose while Del Grosso deals with a groin injury. We’ll see.

Anyway, you can find the full two-deep after the jump. Starters listed in bold.

  1. Wow. Covington must be very good. Just the same, I hope he’s not needed at QB. It is really strange to think that IU’s backup QB has never thrown a pass in college. Then again, I don’t believe Diamont or NB have either. Stay healthy Sudfeld.

    1. I think if Sudfeld goes down for any extended amount of time, Diamont is the replacement. If he needs to come out of the game for a play or two, you’ll probably see either Covington or Boudreau. Diamont appears to be in line for a redshirt, so I think they’re doing all they can to not burn that. Given Wilson’s stance on depth charts, I’m not reading too much into it. Covington is likely included as the backup because he’s the only other guy who has taken a snap at the position so far.

  2. Any word on how Nile Sykes is doing? Never see him listed on any of the depth charts and doesn’t even have him listed on the roster though he is listed on’s roster.

  3. Stan,
Wilson has name dropped him unprompted a couple times in the last week, saying he’s close to being ready for games. Of course, we don’t get to watch practice so I have no first-hand observations.

  4. What has ever become of David Kenney? He just fell of the map and we have never heard anything. Do we know what happened and will we ever see him again?

  5. Mike, during practice, what percentage of the reps do any of the back-up QBs get? Are they distributed evenly or does one of the backups get most of whatever Sudfeld does not get?
