Schwarber named Cubs Player of the Month for August

Slow down, Kyle Schwarber. Just slow it down.

Schwarber continues to hit baseballs all over the place and was named the Chicago Cubs’ Minor League Player of the Month for August. The 21-year-old former Indiana star batted .330 (34-for-103) with eight home runs, 17 RBIs, 20 runs, 14 walks and eight doubles in 28 games last month for Daytona.

During a five-game stretch in late August, Schwarber hit six home runs. He also put together a 15-game hitting streak over which he went 25-for-60 (.417) with nine multi-hit efforts and 14 RBIs.

For the year, Schwarber is batting .344 (90-for-262) with 55 runs, 39 walks, 18 doubles, two triples, 18 homers and 53 RBIs. He’s played in 36 games in left field and 20 games at catcher, where he’s thrown out 34 percent (11 of 32) of would-be base stealers.

Schwarber is headed to the Florida State League Championship with Daytona. The Cubs will face the Fort Myers Miracle, a Minnesota Twins affiliate, in the final round.
