Tegray Scales named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week

Indiana linebacker Tegray Scales earned Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday.

Scales made five tackles, posted his first career sack and picked up one quarterback hurry in Saturday’s 31-27 win over No. 18 Missouri. Scales has played in all three games this season and has 17 total tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native shares the award with Minnesota quarterback Chris Streveler. Scales is the first IU player to earn the honor since Ralph Green on Nov. 25, 2013.

  1. This kid is a force of nature. He’s showing flashes of what he did every down at Colerain, in his first season in Bloomington. On TV he looks slight of build, but when you watch him compete it becomes abundantly clear that he will not be denied. I’ll pull out my crystal ball right now and put him on the Butkus Watch List in 2016. I’ll be running the Knobstone Trail Mini on the 27th, then it’s over to Memorial Stadium for the game. Can’t wait. Go Hoosiers!

  2. Keith,
I’ve heard others say he looks smaller on television. He’s a former wrestler and he has that kind of build. Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve seen a freshman with more definition. Very confident guy, too. Could be a special player over the next few years.

  3. Mike,

I’ve seen him as a HS Junior and Senior here in the Cincinnati area, the kid has a motor. The wrestling background certainly allows him to get off blocks and pursue the ball. He’s taken Coach Knorr’s advice about ‘letting people know who #8 is’ and he’ll definitely be a fixture on defense for the next 3-4 years. Keep up the excellent work Mike. Go Hoosiers!
