Indiana at Louisville men’s soccer

FINAL: INDIANA 3, LOUISVILLE 0. Extremely impressive win for No. 10 Hoosiers over the No. 18 host Cards. First IU win over U of L since ’09. Lillard, Vollmer and Oliver the Hoosier goal-scorers.

84:14: Pretty flick-on slip-header off a corner by Shane Campbell beautifully saved by IU’s Colin Webb. Still 3-0 Indiana.

78:00: Indiana soccer men still lead at Louisville, 3-0, with 12 minutes to play after superb save at the near post by Colin Webb on Ricardo Velazco. Louisville obviously pressing hard, now, but Hoosier defense looks pretty solid.

58:53: GOAL INDIANA: Andrew Oliver from Femi Hollinger-Janzen. Femi got to the endline, drew the ball back perfectly, and Oliver nailed his first goal of the season to make it 3-0, Hoosiers.

51:42: GOAL INDIANA: Indiana 2, Louisville 0. Jamie Vollmer makes no mistake on long feed from Patrick Doody. Indiana leads host Louisville 2-0 at the 51:42 mark. Extremely well-taken right-footed finish from just outside the box in to the upper left corner gave keeper Ball no chance.

47:40: A running shot by IU’s Tanner Thompson on the break finds the side-netting. Hoosiers looking dangerous early on in this period.

46:30: Just 1:30 into the second half, it almost happened again: Lillard header off a Vollmer throw-in required a sprawling save by Ball just inside the far post. Very nearly Lillard’s second goal of the match.

HALFTIME: INDIANA 1, LOUISVILLE 0: Both teams have five shots, one corner-kick and two saves apiece. About as even as it gets, but the visiting Hoosiers have the only shot to count so far, Grant Lillard’s header off a Jamie Vollmer throw-in at the 36:05 mark.

44:06: Fine save by Indiana’s Colin Webb on a dangerous shot from Louisville’s Ricardo Velazco.

36:05: GOAL INDIANA: Grant Lillard, the 6-foot-4 freshmen, gets up high just outside the box, for a header on the money off a deep throw-in from Jamie Vollmer.

32:37: IU’s Tanner Thompson shot from the top of the 18 bounces right into the gut of Louisville keeper Ball.

30:11: Louisville gets its first corner-kick, and it’s well-taken, but nobody could quite get a head on it at the far post.

25:25: Tim Kubel has Louisville’s first shot, but from 25 yards out and not much on it. Still scoreless.

17:30: IU’s Jamie Vollmer tried a rather ambitious 28-yarder, but it wasn’t wide-left by much. Still scoreless at Louisville.

7:25: Femi Hollinger-Janzen made a midfield steal, outpaced a pair of defenders, and his running left-footer from 15 yards out left required a diving save by Louisville keeper Joachim Ball in the box. The shot looked headed inside the far post.

5:00: Louisville has most of the play early, but the first decent shot comes off the right foot of IU’s Matt Foldesy from the top of the 18, off a strong Hoosier counter-attack. It went wide-right.

PREGAME: Louisville’s sparkling new $18.5 million Lynn Stadium is tonight’s venue for No. 10 Indiana (6-1-3) against No. 18 U of L (5-3-1). The Hoosiers haven’t won on Louisville turf, new or old, in three tries since 2005 — and haven’t beaten the Cardinals anywhere since 2009.

IU has gotten in gear offensive of late, notching 10 of its 14 goals in its last four matches. U of L has lost its last two matches, but had most of the play in both. The Cardinal offense is led by Richard Velazco’s four goals and Ben Strong’s three. The Hoosiers haven’t lost a match since Sept. 13, a 1-0 setback to No. 3 Penn State.

Both teams have a 2-1 goal for/against ratio coming in: Louisville 16/8 and Indiana 14/7.
