IU baseball hosts Xavier in fall exhibition

FINAL: Xavier 6, Indiana 4. Scott Donley had three hits, Austin Cangelosi had two RBIs, including a solo home run.

10th: Brad Hartong led off the bottom half with a single but was cut down at second on a fielder’s choice. Hoosiers go down quietly from there. Thomas Belcher yielded a leadoff single, but neutralized it by turning a 1-6-3 double play moments later and adding a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

9th: XAVIER 6, INDIANA 4. Hoosiers add three in the ninth. Austin Cangelosi hit a solo homer over the IU bullpen in left field, followed by a bases-loaded walk by Will Nolden and an RBI sac fly by Isaiah Pasteur. He now has both of the Hoosiers’ RBIs tonight. Quick top of the inning that featured Brad Hartong behind the plate. Hartong throws out a runner trying to steal second base for the second out.

8th: XAVIER 6, INDIANA 1. After Christian Morris yields a leadoff walk and a double to right, Luke Harrison comes in and trades a run for an out on a bang-bang play/throw by Casey Rodrigue at second base. Hoosiers load the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but Demetrius Webb strikes out to end the inning.

7th: XAVIER 5, INDIANA 1. Xavier opens the inning with a pair of singles against Christian Morris and adds another run on a one-out RBI groundout. IU gets out of the inning without further damage despite a miscommunication on a pop to third. Third baseman Austin Cangelosi and shortstop Isaiah Pasteru both went for it, but Pasteur caught it as they collided. They bother appeared to be fine. Nothing major. Hoosiers answer with their first run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Austin Cangelosi, scoring Scott Donley.

6th: XAVIER 4, INDIANA 0. Inning starts with an E6 throwing gaffe by Isaiah Pasteur, allowing Brian Bruening to take second. A walk and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position and a sacrifice fly by Patrick Jones scores Bruening. Indiana goes down in order in the bottom half despite a couple hard-hit balls by Casey Rodrigue and Will Nolden. Xaviers pitching has retired 7 Hoosiers in a row.

5th: XAVIER 3, INDIANA 0. Jake Kelzer allows three runs in the inning — an RBI single over the head of a leaping Nick Ramos at shortstop, an RBI double off the left field wall and a wild pitch with a runner on third. Indiana goes down in order in the bottom half.

4th: XAVIER 0, INDIANA 0. Indiana gets a pair of singles, but nothing comes of them. Nolden led off the fourth with a single through the middle, but was gunned down moments later trying to go first to third on Scott Donley’s second hit of the night. Jake Kelzer enters to pitch and allows Xavier’s first hit, a one-out single to left field by Brian Bruening. A wild pitch put Bruening on second, but IU escapes on a 5-3 double play turned by third baseman Brian Wilhite.

3rd: XAVIER 0, INDIANA 0. Casey Rodrigue reaches on a two-out fielding error by Xavier second baseman David Morton, but gets caught stealing second to end the inning. IU left-hander Caleb Barager relieves Effross and tosses a perfect inning. Barager struck out the first batter he faced on an 89-mph fastball down and in.

2nd: XAVIER 0, INDIANA 0. Indiana wastes a leadoff double by Scott Donley with consecutive groundouts to end the inning. Mr. Baseball Logan Sowers debuts with a groundout to the left side. Effross gets a pair of strikeouts on breaking balls in the bottom half. Another perfect inning.

1st: INDIANA 0, XAVIER 0. Freshman Isaiah Pasteur reached on a two-out infield single, but gets caught in a rundown to end the inning. Clean top half for Scott Effross. Three up, three down.
