Lillard named B1G Defensive Player of the Week

IU freshman center back Grant Lillard earned his first career player of the week award from the Big Ten Monday, bouncing back from taking three stitches to score a goal and shutout Michigan in the second half of Indiana’s 3-1 victory Sunday. He also was part of a 1-0 shutout vs. Notre Dame last Wednesday. Here’s the full IU release:

Indiana University freshman defender Grant Lillard was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Monday after a week that saw him shine on both the offensive and defensive end of the field.

Indiana opened last week with a 1-0 victory over then-No. 1 Notre Dame at Armstrong Stadium. Lillard helped anchor a defense that shut out the reigning National Champions for just the fourth time this season.

On Sunday Lillard played a key role in the Hoosiers’ 3-1 win at Michigan despite missing most of the first half after a cut above his right eye forced him to leave the game. Thirty seconds after re-entering the match to start the second half, Lillard brought Indiana back from a goal down with a header off Jamie Vollmer’s long throw to tie the score at 1-1.

It was Lillard’s third goal this season. In the 72nd minute he notched his first career assist as he helped set up a goal from Tanner Thompson that put IU up 3-1.

The Hoosiers (10-2-3) are back in action Wednesday as they travel to Evansville. Game time is 8 p.m. ET.
