Buss Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Indiana’s Tyra Buss was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in women’s basketball on Monday. Here’s the full release from IU:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -Indiana freshman guard Tyra Buss earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors as announced by the conference office on Monday.

Buss led all scorers with 18 points in IU’s 115-54 season-opening win over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 15. She shot 8-of-14 from the field while leading Indiana with seven steals to go along with five assists, four rebounds and a block.

The Mt. Carmel, Ill., native helped Indiana in breaking single-game team records for points scored (115), 3-point field goals made (16) and margin of victory against a Division I opponent (+61). Buss started in her collegiate debut and played 26 minutes.

Buss was one of six Indiana players to score in double-digits as all of Indiana’s 115 points in the game were scored by freshmen and sophomores.

This is the first conference Freshman of the Week honor for IU since last season when Larryn Brooks earned the award on Jan. 6, 2014.

Indiana will host Valparaiso in Assembly Hall on Tuesday night. That game is set to tip at 7 p.m. ET.

  1. Well, this is not a big surprise. I wouldn’t know of anybody in the conference who had a better start? Tyra’s all around game is incredible! Although she has been known all through her high school career for her scoring, it is quite apparent that she is highly skilled in all facets of the game. I would think that the biggest surprise for most people is her defense, although if you followed her high school career, she averaged around 5 steals a game. Her ability to see the floor and set up her team mates is equally impressive! For those of you who have not seen her play, get out tomorrow night and watch this team against Valparaiso. You will be very impressed by Tyra and the whole IU team! Go Hoosiers!!

  2. I predict Tyramania will take over Bloomington in the next few weeks. Having had the pleasure of watching her through her high school years in basketball, cross country and track I know what an exceptional athlete and person she is. I know I can speak for her huge fan base in Mt. Carmel when I say, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” She is already setting records and making the same kind of plays, shots, and those mind boggling steals she did in high school. All the hecklers would yell, “You won’t do that at Indiana!”, well she already is. Indiana hang on for the ride, it’s going to be great!! Watching her play basketball is so much FUN!!!!
