Indiana soccer men No. 5 NCAA seed

Indiana’s soccer men, the overall No. 5 seed, host the Monmouth-Xavier winner in second-round NCAA tournament play after getting the auto first-round bye.

IU will host its NCAA opener at 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 youth/students.

The Hoosiers could potentially face Maryland again, at Maryland, if both make it to the Elite 8. Maryland was the overall No. 4 seed and Michigan State was seeded No. 3, as the Big Ten got six of its nine men’s soccer programs into the field.

It is a 48-team field. The top 16 seeds get byes. The top 8, after getting their round 1 byes, host games in rounds 2 and 3. The Hoosiers had a RPI of 6 entering the week and a Big Ten Tournament run that ended with Sunday’s 2-1 loss to host Maryland in the title game.

The NCAA badly botched the pairings announcement, with bad internet buffering causing the show to skip over half the pairings (including IU’s) during the initial broadcast.

Xavier will host Monmouth for the first-round game Thursday in IU’s immediate bracket and the Muskateers own a preseason exhibition win over the Hoosiers this season. Should Xavier prevail and come to Bloomington, it already knows the lay of the land and knows the Hoosier squad well.
