IUWBB: Rutgers at Indiana

IU will meet Rutgers in its Big Ten opener, the first Big Ten conference game in Rutgers’ history and the program’s first visit to Assembly Hall.

The Scarlet Knights come to Bloomington ranked No. 17 in the country, but it is questionable as to whether they will have one of their best players, Betnijah Laney. She missed Rutgers’ last game with a sprained thumb.

With 11:21 remaining in the first half, it’s 10-8, IU. Rutgers took an early lead by using their size to outrebound the Hoosiers. But the Hoosiers’ 2-3 zone did force the Scarlet Knights to take some jumpers, which they started to miss. The Hoosiers responded offensively with a steal and a layup by Tyra Buss to make it 7-6. When Rutgers hit two free throws, Larryn Brooks responded with an open 3 at the top of the key.

With 7:55 remaining, IU has upped its lead to 15-10 with a 3-pointer by Larryn Brooks and a steal and a layup by Tyra Buss. Brooks and Buss both have six points.

With 3:30 remaining, it’s been a back and forth game. Hoosiers doing a good job, though, of getting to the free throw line. Jess Walter and Larryn Brooks drew fouls on consecutive possessions and put IU up 21-20.

HALFTIME: Rutgers 28, Indiana 24

Betnijah Laney, who is playing despite a sprained left thumb, has a game-high 12 points. Larryn Brooks leads IU with 8 points.

Hoosiers’ are shooting 27.6 percent from the field, compared to 37 for Rutgers. A big part of that is the rebounding battle — Rutgers is winning 26-19, with 11 of those on the offensive end. Resulted in some easy buckets under the basket (12 second chance points).

The second half did not start well for the Hoosiers. Four fouls on IU, including one under the basket by while trying to keep Rutgers’ off the offensive glass. The Scarlet Knights banked another second-chance opportunity — they have 14 on the game — and extended their lead to 32-24.

Timeout with 15:58 remaining, 34-27 Rutgers. A couple of Hoosier turnovers helped Rutgers build their lead up to 41-29, but Amanda Cahill hit a 3-pointer with 12:10 remaining to pull IU back within single digits.

Timeout with 10:13 remaining, and Cynthia Hernandez has given Rutgers a cushion. It’s 50-34 Rutgers after three made 3-pointers for Hernandez in about a minute’s time.
