Indiana’s Logan Sowers is preseason Big Ten Freshman of the Year

He was Mr. Baseball as a senior at McCutcheon High School, now Logan Sowers has another title to add his name.

Baseball America and D1baseball.com named Sowers as the preseason Big Ten Freshman of the Year as he settles into a spot in Indiana’s outfield. The Lafayette native earned all-state recognition as a high school senior, batting .365 with 11 home runs, 30 RBIs and a .514 on-base percentage. The San Diego Padres selected Sowers in the 31st round of the MLB Amateur Draft.

“He’s got a chance to be really good,” IU coach Chris Lemonis said Tuesday. “He’s still a freshman, so I never like to get too high on the freshmen, but he’s very talented. He’s just a big, physical, athletic kid who’s got a chance to hit with some power and he’s got a feel for the game. That’s what put him ahead with us. He’s a pretty good defender, a pretty good base runner and he’s hit some big hits for us in our scrimmages.”

D1baseball.com also projects Indiana to return to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 3 seed in the Nashville Regional.
