IUWBB: Indiana vs. Northwestern

FINAL: Northwestern 75, Indiana 69

2:48: A big swing when Karlee McBride misses a 3 on one end and Alex Cohen, the Wildcats’ 6-foot-5 center, hit on the other. But McBride came back and hit another 3, this time from the opposite corner, to make it 67-63.

3:46: Northwestern has taken the lead, 63-60. Wildcats getting to the free throw line. A couple more coming up after the break. Nine fouls now on the Hoosiers this half, bringing Northwestern closer to the double bonus.

7:03: Tyra Buss with a big step-back 3 to make it 57-54. But Nia Coffey answers with a 3 — it’s a 57-57 game.

7:52: IU has a slim lead, 54-53. Good news for IU is that Northwestern has 10 fouls this half. The Hoosiers will shoot the double bonus the rest of the way.

11:47: A 7-o lead for IU puts the Hoosiers back on top, 43-42. A couple of Tyra Buss drives to the basket and a Larryn Brooks 3 from the corner sparked the Hoosiers.

15:48: Karlee McBride started the half with a couple of spectacular plays. First, she launched a deep 3 with the shot clock at one second — and hit it. Then she converted a 3-point play under the basket to give IU a 36-34 lead. But a 6-0 run for Northwestern makes the score 40-36.

HALF: Northwestern 32, Indiana 28

It was a rough end to the half for IU. Lots of turnovers. On one sequence, the Hoosiers turned the ball over three times … to the same player … in a span of 15 seconds. They finished the half with 11 turnovers, shooting 1-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats struggled shooting from all over; they ended the half at 35.3 percent from the field and 1-0f-10 from deep.

But the Wildcats cut an early 13-3 rebounding advantage to 20-17 by half’s end.

Alexis Gassion was the Hoosiers leading scorer, at eight points. Northwestern’s Christine Inman leads all scorers at nine points, and Nia Coffey has four points (2-of-10 from the field).

8:30: Hoosiers up 24-16. Big sequence with Alexis Gassion using a pump move underneath. Then Larryn Brooks deflected a pass over the timeline by the Wildcats. Ball went from Tyra Buss to Karlee McBride.

11:49: Hoosiers maintain a 16-12 lead. Amanda Cahill is playing strong under the basket. Even when she is deterred — she missed her last shot — she goes and gets her own rebound. She fed a cutting Jess Walter for a jumper in the lane for IU’s last basket. Northwestern’s Nia Coffey is going off, either. She is 2-of-6 thus far.

14:14: IU shot out to a 12-4 lead, thanks to some good shooting early. Alexis Gassion started the game with a dribble to her left, pulling up for a jumper. Amanda Cahill scored underneath, and on the next possession, Cahill kicked out to Tyra Buss for a 3. The Wildcats have cut the lead with a couple of buckets, making it 12-8.

Coming off of their first win in five tries, the Hoosiers (13-8, 3-7 Big Ten) will host Northwestern (15-6, 5-5) in a 7 p.m. tip.

The Wildcats will present a host of issues for Indiana, including versatile 6-foot-1 forward Nia Coffey, who has averaged 13.7 points and 9.7 rebounds during conference games. Northwestern’s center, Alex Cohen, may be 6-foot-5, but she shoots better than 40 percent from behind the 3-point line.

To give you an idea of how well the Wildcats can score, they lost their last game, but it was a 102-99 decision to No. 17 Iowa. The Hoosiers haven’t scored more than 75 points during the Big Ten season.
