Rutgers at Indiana baseball

FINAL: INDIANA 6, RUTGERS 0. Jake Kelzer throws eight superb shutout innings for the win and Ryan Halstead tosses a 1-2-3 ninth. Hoosiers out-hit the Scarlet Knights 13-3.

END EIGHTH: Indiana 6, Rutgers 0. After John Jennings worked a one-out walk and reached second on a groundout, IU freshman Logan Sowers made a superb, sprinting, flat-out diving catch of Tom Marcinczyk’s screaming liner to left-center to preserve Jake Kelzer’s shutout. tHE Hoosiers then doubled their lead in the bottom of the frame. Scott Donley then greeted Rutgers reliever Ryan Wares with a leadoff single and scored on Sowers’ ringing double to the corner in right. Austin Cangelosi was hit by a pitch. An attempted double-steal produced an out at home, but Isaiah Pasteur’s infield single scored Sowers, and Pasteur later came around on Colby Stratten’s second RBI hit on the day, a lined single to left.

END SEVENTH: Indiana 3, Rutgers 0. Jake Kelzer yells into his glove in celebration after striking out Milo Freeman swinging to end the Scarlet Knights’ seventh with men on first and second. IU then got two-out singles from Brad Hartong and Craig Dedelow in its half of the frame, but Dedelow was nailed after rounding first when a throw from right field toward third was cut off and relayed to first.

END SIXTH: Indiana 3, Rutgers 0. Nothing much doing for either side in the sixth, though the Hoosiers turned their second 4-6-3 double-play of the ballgame in the top of the frame after Joe D’Annunzio had reached on the game’s first error (a wild throw to first after a very nice short-hop pickup by Isaiah Pasteur).

END FIFTH: Indiana 3, Rutgers 0. Scott Donley just missed his second homer of the season, crushing a ball out but foul down the left field line. He then singled, but was cut down trying to steal second in what looked like a missed hit-and-run sign

END FOURTH: Indiana 3, Rutgers 0. A two-out single by IU’s Casey Rodrigue went for naught as Brad Hartong’s subsequent liner went right to right fielder Tom Marcinczyk.

END THIRD: Indiana 3, Rutgers 0. Both sides go out 1-2-3 in a frame capped by a great catch from Rutgers third-baseman Milo Freeman on a Will Nolden pop that carried into the Hoosier dugout and required acrobatics, almost a handstand by Freeman.

END SECOND: Indiana 3, Rutgers 0. Former Bloomington North standout Colby Stratten, making his second straight start at second base, came through with a blast off the leftfield wall on the fly for a double to score Austin Cangelosi, who had led off the inning with a ground single. Will Nolden, who doubled down the left field line in the interim, had to make sure Stratten’s smash wouldn’t get caught, and took third on the play and subsequently scored as Craig Dedelow beat out a high-chop grounder to first on a single. The Hoosiers were unlucky not to get more as Scott Donley roped a liner with the bases loaded but it carried straight to Rutgers left fielder Joe D’Annunzio.

END FIRST: Indiana 1, Rutgers 0. The Hoosiers struck quickly as Casey Rodrigue drew a leadoff walk and came all the way around as Brad Hartong roped a double down the left field line. But Hartong, who advanced to third on Craig Dedelow’s deep drive caught in right-center for the first out, was then cut down at the plate trying to score on Scott Donley’s grounder on a nice throw from Scarlet Knight first baseman Christian Campbell to catcher R.J. Devish. A strikeout then ended the frame. The Scarlet Knights’ Joe D’Annunzio was hit by a pitch to start the game but IU pitcher Jake Kelzer promptly picked him off first, which helped render a subsequent infield single moot.

PREGAME: Former Bloomington South standout Jake Kelzer takes the bump for Indiana, which hopes to build some momentum off Friday night’s 4-3 comeback win over Rutgers, with a pair of hit batsmen and a game-winning RBI single by freshman Logan Sowers in the ninth. IU improved to 19-11 overall and 3-6 in B1G play, and the Scarlet Knights are 11-21 overall and 5-5 in league play. We’ll have updates hete and via Twitter @htograham. Thanks for checking in!
