Indiana hosts Long Beach State for Game 2 of series #iubase

FINAL: INDIANA 7, LONG BEACH STATE 2. Scott Effross pitched a clean ninth inning to snap IU’s four-game home losing streak and set up a big rubber game on Sunday afternoon. Craig Dedelow finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and now has five hits and six runs driven in this weekend. Scott Donley also added two hits for IU. Kyle Hart earned his third win of the season and second in as many outings.

EIGHTH INNING: Benches cleared at the end of the top of the inning after Long Beach State’s Zack Rivera apparently took exception with a tag by Scott Effross, as the IU pitcher raced to first base to meet Rivera for the final out. After Effross made the tag, he and Rivera appeared to jaw at each other. Effross gave him a stare as he ran toward the IU dugout, then Rivera and first baseman Austin Cangelosi traded shoves. That led to both dugouts emptying. Will Nolden got some words in after he ran from right field and the first base umpire walked over and motioned for him to leave. It doesn’t look like anyone was ejected and no punches were thrown. In the bottom half, IU picked up four runs for insurance. Craig Dedelow now has four RBIs tonight and six for the series after his two-run double to left-centerfield. Scott Donley and Will Nolden each added RBI singles. INDIANA 4, LONG BEACH STATE 2.

SEVENTH INNING: Quick inning on both sides. Effross, who hit 95 miles per hour on the stadium gun during the seventh inning, has been perfect through his first two innings with two strikeouts. INDIANA 3, LONG BEACH STATE 2.

SIXTH INNING: Scott Effross came on to relieve Kyle Hart, who allowed two runs on four hits over his five innings of work. Effross breezed through a perfect sixth on 11 pitches. With two outs in the bottom half, Craig Dedelow put a good swing on a ball that feel just a couple feet short of going over the right field fence. INDIANA 3, LONG BEACH STATE 2.

FIFTH INNING: Kyle Hart retires the side in order on 16 pitches and he’s now up to a season-high 93 on the night. That will probably do it for the left-hander. In the bottom half, Casey Rodrigue put the Hoosiers ahead on an RBI single to right field that scored Austin Cangelosi from second base. First lead this weekend for IU. INDIANA 3, LONG BEACH STATE 2.

FOURTH INNING: Hart labored to get out of the fourth, throwing 30 pitches and finding himself in a showdown against Zack Domingues with two outs and runners on first and second. Domingues worked a nine-pitch at-bat, fouling off four balls in a row before lining out to Dedelow to end the inning. IU coach Chris Lemonis said this week that Hart is expected to be on a pitch count of 75 for the rest of the season. Hart’s already at 77 for the night, with no action in the IU bullpen. Craig Dedelow tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Nick Ramos. Dedelow is now up to four RBIs in six plate appearances this weekend. LONG BEACH STATE 2, INDIANA 2.

THIRD INNING: Hart gave up a leadoff single, but no further damage. He’s at 47 pitches after three innings. Indiana went down in order in the bottom half, including a pair of strikeouts for Long Beach State starter Chris Mathewson — who, judging by that name, was born to be a pitcher. LONG BEACH STATE 2, INDIANA 1.

SECOND INNING: Craig Dedelow put Indiana on the board with a solo home run to right-centerfield with two outs in the inning. Dedelow is putting together a nice weekend with three RBIs in his first five at-bats. Hart handled the first two outs of the top half on his own, fielding and flipping the ball to first for out No. 1 before catching a comebacker for the second out. LONG BEACH STATE 2, INDIANA 1.

FIRST INNING: Things were moving along relatively well for Kyle Hart until Brock Lundquist hit a two-run homer over the right field wall. Indiana seemed to be out of the inning one batter early when first baseman Austin Cangelosi tried to turn a double play. Cangelosi fielded a grounder, stepped on the bag and double-clutched as he went to throw to second. The throw arrived just a few seconds too late, keeping the inning alive for Lundquist, who supplied the Dirtbags’ fourth home run of this series. Hart used 17 pitches to get out of the inning. LONG BEACH STATE 2, INDIANA 0.

PREGAME: After Friday’s blowout, Indiana returns to Bart Kaufman Field for Game 2 of its weekend series with Long Beach State. Kyle Hart, who is on a pitch count of 75, will make the start for Indiana. Hart is coming off his most encouraging outing of the season last weekend at Maryland, when he went five innings on 71 pitches and allowed only one run on three hits. This will be Hart’s third consecutive start.

In the lineup, Brian Wilhite will start at third over Isaiah Pasteur. It will be Wilhite’s first start at the position since March 11.
